Working for many years, workers still return to learn a trade
Realizing that practical experience is not enough to meet recruitment requirements, many workers in Can Tho return to vocational schools, expanding job opportunities.
Back to school
Before deciding to return to school, Mr. Nguyen Minh Chau (born in 1995, majoring in Air Conditioning Engineering, Can Tho Vocational College) had about 5 years of struggling, accumulating no small amount of practical experience in the field of air conditioning engineering at an outside facility.
However, the longer he worked, the more Chau realized his limitations when he only relied on his skills without a systematic theoretical foundation. "Through the working process, I realized that only practical skills were not enough, it was necessary to master theory to understand operating principles. Therefore, I decided to go to school to improve my skills, supplement knowledge and qualifications to serve the job," Chau shared.
In particular, Mr. Chau has high expectations for the internship program at the enterprise connected by the school. According to Mr. Chau, being able to directly go to the workshop and factory to practice will help learners improve their skills, get acquainted with the working environment and apply the knowledge they have learned. If the internship content is suitable for the training program and business needs, this is also an opportunity to accumulate experience and create a premise for finding jobs after graduation.
Mr. Chau's story is not an isolated case. In fact, a part of workers after working time realize that accumulated experience is not enough to meet new requirements, especially when technology and production processes are constantly changing.
According to the Can Tho City Employment Service Center (DVVL), the demand for recruiting untrained workers in the area still accounts for a significant proportion, mainly in general labor positions and production workers. However, this group of workers often faces limitations when approaching positions that require expertise, techniques and higher requirements for stability.
Through job connection activities, the Center recognizes that businesses increasingly value skills, experience and adaptability. Trained workers, meeting recruitment requirements, have more advantages in finding and maintaining jobs.
Training associated with business needs
According to Can Tho Vocational College, the employment rate of students after graduation in recent years has reached 88-90%. The school promotes business linkages and internships to improve training quality and meet recruitment needs.
Mr. Tran Thien Phuc - Deputy Director of the Training and Cooperation Linkage Center (Can Tho Vocational College) - informed that in 3 years (2024-2026), the school has brought a total of 1,880 students to intern at enterprises.
Mr. Phuc said that internships at enterprises help learners access machinery, technology, and practical production processes, while improving skills, practicing industrial style and adapting to the labor market.
Not only is it an opportunity to experience, the internship can also become a screening step, recruiting right from when the learner has not graduated. Students who show good expertise and working attitude have the opportunity to be accepted by businesses after the internship," Mr. Phuc said.
In addition, the school coordinates with the Can Tho City Employment Service Center and domestic and foreign partners to expand job opportunities for learners.
According to Decree 238/2025/ND-CP, students studying some heavy, hazardous, and dangerous occupations according to the prescribed list are entitled to a 70% tuition fee reduction, contributing to reducing financial burden and creating conditions for access to vocational training.
