From dilapidated roofs to the joy of settling down for poor people in Vinh Long

Vinh Long - Great Solidarity Houses help poor households settle down, relieve worries about housing, stabilize life and add motivation to rise up.

New roofs ignite hope for the poor

The newly built Great Solidarity houses are helping many poor households in Vinh Long alleviate their worries about housing. Behind those warm homes is the journey of families overcoming difficulties due to lack of production land, precarious jobs, and the desire to have a stable place to live.

Mr. Nguyen Van Sang (Luc Si Thanh commune) said that his family is classified as a poor household, does not have production land, and lives mainly based on unstable hired work. The old house is degraded, making it even more difficult for the family every time it rains.

Difficulties became even more compounded when Mr. Sang suffered from blood pressure and diabetes, and had to take medicine every day. Limited health caused his hired work to be interrupted frequently, and his meager income was not enough to cover living expenses and savings to repair the house.

Being supported with 90 million VND to build a new house, the family has conditions to stabilize their accommodation, no longer having to worry about house leaks when it rains. The new house also adds motivation for the family to try to overcome difficulties," Mr. Sang added.

Sharing the joy of settling down, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Quan's family (born in 1986, in Tien Loi hamlet, Tan Phu commune) was supported with 80 million VND to build a house. The funding helped the family improve their living space and reduce the burden of housing.

From difficult circumstances, the support for Great Solidarity houses is practical, helping people have a safer place to live. This is also a fulcrum for families to have more faith and strive to stabilize their lives.

Mobilizing resources to care for housing for the poor

Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuan Thanh, Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Vinh Long province, said that the whole province has built 1,959 new Great Solidarity houses, worth 118.9 billion VND, and repaired 126 houses with a cost of 4.1 billion VND.

The above results show the joint efforts of the Front, socio-political organizations, mass associations, businesses, philanthropists and the community, contributing to helping many poor and difficult households stabilize their lives.

The province's Fund for the Poor has allocated 45.46 billion VND to support the construction of 859 new houses and repair of 114 Great Solidarity houses. The fund is used to support households in difficult housing circumstances.

In addition to housing support, the Front and member organizations also mobilized and presented 492,869 gifts to policy families, poor households and people in difficult circumstances, with a total value of 1694 billion VND.

Social security activities are implemented in many forms, from supporting house construction, giving gifts to helping people at risk, suffering from dangerous diseases or affected by natural disasters, spreading the spirit of mutual affection.

In the coming time, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the province will continue to mobilize resources, review poor households, near-poor households and families facing housing difficulties, and promptly support the construction and repair of Great Solidarity houses," Ms. Thanh added.
