2 more wind power projects in Gia Lai are licensed for power operation

THANH TUẤN (báo lao động) 07/01/2026 17:35 (GMT+7)

Gia Lai - After a long time of overcoming limitations and shortcomings, the two wind power projects Ia Pech and Ia Pech 2 have been licensed and put into commercial operation.

On January 6, the Department of Industry and Trade of Gia Lai province announced that the entire Ia Pech and Ia Pech 2 Wind Power Plant projects (total capacity of 99 MW) have officially come into commercial operation.

This is a wind power project cluster with a total investment of about 3,500 billion VND. In January 2024, Ia Pech 2 Wind Power Plant completed the commercial operation of 15 turbines, with a total capacity of 49.5 MW.

Ia Pech Wind Power Plant alone has been commercially operating 5 turbines (16.5 MW capacity) since 2021. By December 2025, the remaining 10 turbines (33 MW capacity) will officially be put into commercial operation, completing the entire designed capacity.

The Electricity Trading Company (EPTC), under the Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), has issued a document agreeing on the commercial operation time for 10/15 wind turbines from December 30, 2025.

The competent authority decides to put the remaining capacity into commercial operation and electricity purchase and sale after the investor completes a comprehensive review of the legality and technical aspects, and commits to being responsible for the items that have fully met the conditions for commercial operation according to the electricity purchase and sale contract.

The official operation of this wind power plant cluster not only supplements an important power source for the national power system but also contributes to promoting green energy transition, increasing revenue for local budgets.

As Lao Dong Newspaper has reported, the new Electricity Law stipulates that the Provincial People's Committee has the authority to grant electricity operation licenses for power projects with a capacity of less than 50 MW; previously, this authority belonged to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Currently, in Gia Lai province, there are still a number of wind power projects that have not been put into commercial operation (partly) and purchased and sold, although these projects have been completed since 2023.

The reason is that these projects have some violations of the law on construction investment such as construction on forestry land, converting land use purposes for wind power towers that are not in accordance with regulations.

After the Government Inspectorate pointed out violations and shortcomings, investors of wind power projects worth thousands of billions of VND have gradually overcome the problems and implemented them in accordance with legal regulations.

According to the National Power Development Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 ( Adjusted Power Plan VIII), the total capacity of renewable energy projects in the province is about 9,657.1 MW. Of which, wind power has 74 projects with a total capacity of 5,431 MW; solar power has 24 projects with a total capacity of 1,530 MW; hydropower has 48 projects with a total capacity of 1,353 MW...

Currently, the authorities are implementing procedures to select investors for renewable energy projects. According to the plan, by 2026, Gia Lai province will organize bidding for 57 wind power, solar power, small hydropower and thermal power projects with a total capacity of more than 3,000 MW.
