Doctors who do not practice for 24 months may have their licenses revoked

According to the provisions of the 2023 Law on Medical Examination and Treatment, practitioners may have their practicing licenses revoked if they do not perform medical examination and treatment for 24 consecutive months.

This regulation was issued by the Ministry of Health in response to the case of a doctor who was licensed to practice pediatrics in September 2024. By December 2025, this doctor will begin studying for a Master's degree in Ear, Nose and Throat and has not registered for pediatric practice at any medical examination and treatment facility for nearly 24 months.

According to Article 35 of the 2023 Law on Medical Examination and Treatment, not practicing medical examination and treatment for 24 consecutive months is one of the cases where the practicing license is revoked.

However, going to school does not mean being interrupted from practicing. The Ministry of Health said that if during the master's course, the doctor still participates in medical examination and treatment at the medical examination and treatment facility and that job is suitable for the scope of practice that has been granted, then it is not considered not practicing continuously for 24 months.

Thus, doctors who are studying in other majors can still maintain their practicing license if they still perform medical examination and treatment activities in accordance with the scope of practice granted during their studies.
