Expected to have 99 communes and wards when merging Can Tho, Soc Trang, Hau Giang
Can Tho - It is expected that after the merger of Can Tho, Soc Trang, Hau Giang will have 99 administrative units (30 wards and 69 communes).
After coordinating with Soc Trang and Hau Giang provinces, the People's Committee of Can Tho City has drafted a Project to arrange and merge provincial-level administrative units.
Regarding the plan, Can Tho city under the Central Government will be established on the basis of merging administrative units of Soc Trang province, Hau Giang province and Can Tho city.
Regarding the results, Can Tho City has 6,400.83km2 (reaching 426.72% of the standard), population of 4,043,859 people (reaching 404.38% of the standard), 99 affiliated units (30 wards and 69 communes).
Units at the same level adjacent to Can Tho city are Vinh Long province, Ca Mau province (after the arrangement), An Giang province (after the arrangement), Dong Thap province (after the arrangement).
The reason for naming the newly established provincial-level administrative unit as Can Tho City is because of its long-standing historical and cultural heritage; high brand reputation; ensuring the principle of using one of the existing names, easy to identify, concise, easy to read, easy to remember.
The reason for placing the newly established provincial-level administrative-political center in Can Tho City (in the current Ninh Kieu District) is because it meets the conditions of facilities, materials and urban infrastructure; central geographical location, convenient for connecting traffic and regional linkages; in accordance with planning and orientation for long-term, sustainable economic development.
The project also includes content on impact assessment and implementation organization, including a plan to reorganize the apparatus, arrange a team of cadres, civil servants, public employees, and workers and resolve regimes and policies when implementing the arrangement of provincial administrative units.
According to the assessment, the Project to reorganize provincial administrative units of Can Tho City, Soc Trang Province and Hau Giang Province is completely consistent with the actual situation and policies of the Central Government.
When reorganizing, 2 provincial-level administrative units will be reduced; 28 district-level administrative units will be terminated; 164 communal-level administrative units will be reduced; the number of organizational units, cadres, civil servants, public employees and workers will be streamlined, contributing to reducing state budget expenditures, expanding the scale of the area, focusing resources on investing in building socio-economic infrastructure for newly established provincial-level administrative units.
Can Tho City People's Committee has also sent an official dispatch to the People's Committees of Soc Trang and Hau Giang provinces on organizing propaganda and organizing to collect voters' opinions on the draft Project to reorganize and merge provincial-level administrative units.
Proactively coordinate with the Standing Committee of the People's Council at the same level to organize a meeting to approve the Provincial Project; complete the dossier and send it to the People's Committee of Can Tho City before April 20, 2025.
