Ca Mau - Faced with the increasing number of coastal and riverbank erosion, Ca Mau has implemented a large-scale project to protect and exploit effectively.

On January 8, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ca Mau province announced that the Chairman of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province has signed a decision approving the plan to implement the Project on preventing and combating riverbank and coastal erosion until 2030, with a vision to 2050 in the province.

According to the project, Ca Mau focuses on prioritizing investment in handling areas with particularly dangerous landslides, with high risks directly affecting the safety of residential areas, urban areas and key infrastructure systems along rivers and coastal areas. The selected construction solutions are suitable for geological, hydrological conditions and the characteristics of long coastlines and weak soil in the locality; at the same time, harmoniously combining hard works, soft works and ecological works.

The total capital requirement for the project is more than VND26,820 billion, with the length of the dyke and embankment expected to be about 301km. The items are divided into 3 main groups of works, including: group of coastal restoration embankments; group of coastal protection works; group of riverbank protection works.

In addition to construction solutions, Ca Mau province also focuses on the group of non-construction solutions. In particular, focusing on propagating and raising awareness and proactiveness of authorities at all levels and communities on the responsibility of preventing, responding to and handling landslides; organizing drills to respond to natural disaster situations, improving the capacity to prevent natural disasters for the community.

Along with that, the locality has strengthened inspection, prevention and strict handling of acts of illegal construction, house construction or organization of illegal production and business that affect the safety of riverbanks and coasts, causing increased risk of landslides.

In the period of 20262030, Ca Mau will implement investment in projects to restore coastal roads, dykes, and coastal protection dykes in eroded areas; projects for dykes and dykes to prevent riverbank erosion to protect the safety of urban areas, concentrated residential areas, and important infrastructure works. At the same time, the province will replant and restore mangrove forests and coastal protection forests in alluvial areas and newly formed land after restoring the coastline.

In the period of 20302050, the locality focuses on completing the arrangement and relocation of residents in vulnerable areas; building sustainable livelihood models associated with coastal protection and marine economic development; maintaining and expanding coastal mangrove forests and other natural ecosystems; controlling activities that cause environmental degradation and increase the risk of landslides.

The implementation of the project aims to raise awareness, role and responsibility of all levels, sectors and people in preventing and combating riverbank and coastal erosion, contributing to ensuring population safety, stabilizing the development of the marine economy and adapting to increasingly extreme climate change.
