Workers away from home seek opportunities to stabilize their lives in Hai Phong
Hai Phong - Leaving their hometown to work in Hai Phong, many workers rent rooms, send their children back to their hometowns and save every penny, hoping to have a stable place to live and stick with for a long time.
Husband and wife go to work together, two children sent to grandparents
The rented room of Vu Thi Thi and Mua A Va is located in a rented house in Tu Thong TDP, Tu Minh ward, Hai Phong city. The area is not large, just enough to store essential items for the couple's life. There are not many spaces, every corner in the room is used to store clothes, belongings and daily necessities.
Leaving Son La to go to Hai Phong to work as workers, Thi and his wife had to get used to a completely different life from their hometown. The two worked as workers at an packaging manufacturing company in Dai An Industrial Park.
Because the room is small, cooking is also calculated by the family to be both convenient and economical. The electric kettle becomes a familiar item. Meals are prepared right in the room door area, where there is a small space to place pots and pre-process food.

Thi's two children, a 9-year-old and a 7-year-old, are currently sent to grandparents to take care of in their hometown. Away from their children, the couple has to calculate every expense. Room rent, food, living expenses and remittances to their hometown are all balanced from the income of the two workers.
For out-of-province workers like Thi and A Va, the current rented room is temporary accommodation for the couple to work and earn income.
What they want in the long term is to have a more stable place to live, enough space to welcome their children down to live together, instead of the scene of parents working far away, and children having to be sent to grandparents in the countryside.

Leaving home to work, hoping for a stable place to live
Mr. and Mrs. Hoang Thi Yeu (born 1994) and Mr. Nguyen Van Tuyen (born 1993), from Niem Son commune, Tuyen Quang province, have also been attached to Hai Phong for about 8 years. Both went down to the city to find work and are currently working as workers at a company in the Dai An expanded industrial park.
Previously, life in the countryside was mainly associated with farming. When they came to Hai Phong, the couple had a more stable income, about 5-10 million VND/person/month. Each month, the family tries to send about 3 million VND back to their hometown.
Mr. Tuyen and Ms. Yeu's two children are currently in 9th and 6th grade. The money sent back to their hometown is partly for their children's studies and living and supporting the family.

Although they have lived and worked in Hai Phong for many years, the family still has to rent a house. For workers like Mr. Tuyen and Ms. Yeu, a stable place of residence is meaningful not only in reducing the pressure of rent but also in helping families have conditions to reunite and bring their children to live with their parents.
We have come here to work for many years, so we also hope to have a stable place to live in the future so that we can stick together for a long time, without having to move houses many times" - Mr. Tuyen said.
Not only families with wives and children, young unmarried workers are also looking for opportunities to stabilize their lives in Hai Phong.
Thao A Lu (23 years old, from Dien Bien) currently rents a room in Tan Hung ward, Hai Phong city and works at the Tan Phu Hung social housing project construction site. With an income of about 13-15 million VND/month, Lu said that working in Hai Phong helps him have a more stable income compared to when he was in his hometown.

Not yet married, Lu still determined that Hai Phong is a place where he can stick for a long time if he has a stable job and suitable living conditions.
I want to work here for a long time. If there are stable housing conditions, life will be more favorable" - Lu shared.
For workers far from home, rented rooms are a place to return after each shift. However, their desire does not stop at a room enough to live in. A spacious, stable place to live, suitable for their income, will help them have a better living space and be assured to stick with the city for a long time.
