Traffic police explain the situation of cars squeezing in, causing loss of safe distance on the highway

Starting today (August 27), the Traffic Police force (CSGT) will fine drivers who do not comply with regulations on safe distance with cars running in front on the Phap Van - Nghi Son expressway.

This regulation raises many drivers' questions: If they are maintaining a safe distance from the car in front but suddenly another vehicle overtakes, squeezes into the gap, causing the distance to be shortened, no longer reaching the minimum level, will the car behind be fined or not?

Regarding this issue, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Pham Duc Dong - Deputy Head of the Road and Railway Traffic Patrol and Control Guidance Department (Department of Traffic Police) - informed that functional forces will base on electronic data to determine the diễn biến of the situation.

With such objective errors, traffic police will certainly not consider handling cars behind, but will consider handling cars that squeeze in. These squeezed cars may violate errors such as overtaking or changing lanes improperly, not keeping a safe distance from the car in front," Senior Lieutenant Colonel Pham Duc Dong shared.

Regarding cases where vehicles in front move slowly, making it impossible for vehicles in the rear to maintain a safe distance according to regulations, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Dong said that this is also one of the important issues that the Traffic Police Department is considering when issuing regulations on overtaking lanes.

According to Senior Lieutenant Colonel Dong, the overtaking lane, i.e. the inner lane on the left, adjacent to the median strip (lane 1 - PV), is being piloted on the Hanoi - Hai Phong and Cau Gie - Ninh Binh expressways.

In appropriate situations, people can use the overtaking lane to overtake the vehicle in front when ensuring sufficient safety conditions.

In the coming time, we will coordinate with relevant agencies to continue piloting overtaking lanes for expressways that meet the conditions," Senior Lieutenant Colonel Pham Duc Dong said.

Also according to Senior Lieutenant Colonel Dong, on all expressways currently, warning lines are arranged for the minimum distance between vehicles in front and behind to ensure safety.

In the coming time, the Traffic Police Department will propose to the construction sector to direct bridge and road management units to strengthen marking of distance warning points on the expressway. Thereby, helping drivers easily recognize and proactively maintain a safe distance from the car in front, limiting the risk of traffic accidents.
