Lao Cai Secretary receives Canada Minister of International Development
Lao Cai - On January 7, the Provincial Party Secretary received the Minister of International Development of Canada and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Embassy of Canada in Vietnam.
At the reception, Lao Cai Provincial Party Secretary Trinh Viet Hung expressed his pleasure at welcoming Mr. Randeep Sarai - Minister of International Development of Canada; Mr. Jim Nickel - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Embassy of Canada in Vietnam and members of the working delegation to visit and work in Lao Cai province.
Mr. Trinh Viet Hung gave a general information about the new Lao Cai province, established from July 1, 2025 on the basis of merging the two provinces of Yen Bai and Lao Cai; clearly stated the province's important strategic position, as an international trade gateway on the economic corridor of Con Minh - Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong - Quang Ninh; at the same time, emphasized the province's outstanding potential and advantages in developing the mineral exploitation industry, border gate economy, logistics, eco-cultural tourism...

Regarding the cooperative relationship between Lao Cai province and the Embassy and localities and partners of Canada, Lao Cai province currently has 6 programs and projects funded by the Government of Canada, focusing on sustainable livelihood development, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, gender equality and adapting to climate change.
Based on the priority areas in the Canada - Vietnam development cooperation policy and the development orientation of the province, the Lao Cai Provincial Party Secretary respectfully requested the Minister and Ambassador to report to the Government of Canada to continue to pay attention to supporting preferential loans for Lao Cai province to implement disaster prevention programs and projects; develop transport infrastructure; develop agriculture and rural areas adapting to climate change and green growth; projects on improving medical capacity, education...
At the same time, introduce Canadian businesses and investors to learn about opportunities and invest in Lao Cai province.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Randeep Sarai, Minister of International Development of Canada, expressed his sympathy for the province's difficulties and losses due to the impact of natural disasters in the recent past.
The Minister of International Development of Canada hopes that the support that Canada will deploy to Vietnam in general and Lao Cai province in particular will contribute to helping people soon stabilize their lives.
Minister Randeep Sarai also affirmed that after this visit, he will share information, connect localities and partners of Canada to research, learn and implement cooperation activities with Lao Cai province as well as connect and strengthen people-to-people diplomacy activities between the two sides.
