LD26243: Breast cancer relapses, poor mother hopes to continue treatment
Ms. Le Thi Dao is struggling to treat a recurring cancer when her family's economy is exhausted. What she hopes for is to have more opportunities to treat the disease so that she can be with her young child.
After a journey of breast cancer treatment, Ms. Le Thi Dao (born in 1979, Dong Nai city) continues to face suspected metastatic lesions in her lungs and liver. Economically exhausted, she only hopes to have more conditions for treatment to live with her 12-year-old son.
Ms. Dao was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer after realizing that her nipple was retracted, accompanied by prolonged pain. Initially, she thought the symptoms were due to heavy work, so she did not go for an examination. Until she felt an abnormal mass in the armpit area, she went to the hospital and received a diagnosis of the disease.
According to her, the doctor advised treatment with chemicals combined with biological drugs to control the disease and limit the risk of recurrence. However, the cost was too high, making it impossible for her to fully follow the recommended protocol. She had undergone 8 rounds of chemotherapy and then had to stop using biological drugs because she did not have enough money.
After that, she still had regular check-ups as scheduled. In a recent examination, diagnostic imaging results recorded many small nodules in both lungs and nodulous lesions in the liver, requiring monitoring for the possibility of secondary lesions. These results made her even more worried as the treatment journey was still long, while the money was running out.
Currently, Ms. Dao is trying to maintain her job at Elite Apparatech Co., Ltd., where she has been attached for many years. Her monthly income is about 6 million VND, but declining health prevents her from going to work regularly. On days of fatigue after treatment, she has to ask for leave; when she is healthier, she tries to return to work to have money to cover living expenses.
According to her, the cost of each treatment course can be up to tens of millions of VND, depending on the type of medicine and doctor's prescription. Although health insurance partially supports it, the amount of money to pay for itself is still a heavy burden. The money saved in the past has almost been used up for treatment. She has received help from philanthropists and the patient support department at the hospital, but this source of money is not guaranteed for subsequent treatment courses.
In difficult times, she even thought about receiving one-time social insurance to have money to continue treatment. However, she is still concerned because her child's health, income and future all depend on her ability to work.
What makes Ms. Dao most worried is that her son is only 12 years old, is in 6th grade and still needs her mother's care. She is worried when her health is increasingly declining, her job is precarious, and the cost of treatment exceeds her ability.
She just hopes to have money to continue treatment and live many more years with her child," she shared.
After each treatment course, she is often tired and has to rest for a while. As her health gradually recovers, she tries to go to work, saving every small amount to prepare for the next time she goes to the hospital. Despite the difficulties, she still tries to re-examine according to the doctor's appointment and find ways to continue treatment.
Mr. Vo Huu Tung Vuong, Head of Xuan Lap neighborhood, Xuan Lap ward, Dong Nai city, confirmed that Ms. Dao is in difficult circumstances. According to him, illness prevents her from going to work regularly, affecting her life and expensive cancer treatment.
For Ms. Dao, every chance to heal is more hope to be with her child, watching her child grow up. What she needs at this time is practical support to be able to continue her treatment journey.
