LD26232: Child suffers from critical illness, family exhausted due to borrowing money for treatment
The child suffers from a serious illness, and the long treatment journey has made the family's economy increasingly exhausted.
Nguyen Thi Cam Dan (born in 2011) is the second child of Mr. Nguyen Van Liem (born in 1986) and Ms. Truong Thi Phuong (born in 1986) residing in group 4, Binh Duc hamlet, Tri Ton commune, An Giang.
Before being diagnosed with the disease, Dan developed symptoms such as vomiting and abdominal pain. The family took her to the hospital, and the doctor discovered that she had a blood infection and acute liver failure. From then on, her treatment journey began with long days in the hospital.
According to the family's sharing, Cam Dan had 2 months of treatment at Children's Hospital 3, the total cost during this time was up to 400 million VND. The amount of money was too large for the family to continue living, Mr. Liem and Ms. Phuong asked to transfer their child to Children's Hospital 2.
However, even though the cost has decreased, the amount of money for medicine, treatment and care still continuously arises. After about a year of treating Cam Dan, the family's savings are almost running out. Mr. and Mrs. Liem had to borrow money from acquaintances to have money for their child's treatment.

According to the family, in addition to blood infection and acute liver failure, Cam Dan was also diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis. Every time the disease relapses, she often has seizures, pain and cannot eat much. Doctors said she needs blood filtration.
According to the family, each blood filtration costs about 80 million VND and must be performed according to the doctor's instructions. This is an amount of money beyond the ability of a family that only lives on seasonal hired work.
Before their child contracted a serious illness, Mr. and Mrs. Liem worked in the fields in An Giang; after the harvest season, the two went down to the river to catch clams, boil them and sell them. The work was hard but each day they earned about 500,000 VND, enough to cover essential needs in the family. Since their child became seriously ill, that work had to stop. The couple took turns being on duty by their child's side almost 24/24 hours, unable to go to work to earn money.
“My child is sick, so my husband and I can't do anything, we just know to stay by his side to take care of him. The money in the house is running out, we borrow from anyone we can, we borrow to take care of our child. But if we borrow a lot, we have to pay interest, it's getting more and more difficult,” Mr. Liem choked up.
Not only did her parents have to quit their jobs, but her eldest daughter Nguyen Truong Thanh Nha (born in 2006) also had to drop out of school to work at a company near her house. The girl's simple wish is to earn extra income, help her parents cover living expenses and have more money for her younger sibling's treatment.
At the age of 15, Cam Dan should have been able to go to school, have peaceful days with family and friends, but illness has made her life associated with hospitals, medicine and pain. At 15 years old, her body is constricted, small like a primary school child. As for Mr. Liem and Ms. Phuong, the past months have also become a long journey of worry. They no longer think about doing business or saving, only hoping to have money for their child to continue treatment.
My husband and I don't expect much, we just want money so that our child can be treated. My child is still young but has to endure too much pain...", Mr. Liem said.
Mr. Liem shared that his family situation is currently very exhausted, while Cam Dan still needs to be monitored and treated for a long time. Debts for treatment are becoming a heavy burden. Mr. Liem's family really hopes to receive the sharing of philanthropists and readers near and far so that Cam Dan has more conditions to continue treatment, reduce pain and have more opportunities to return to normal life.
