Hanoi consults on project to extend Cat Linh - Ha Dong metro to Xuan Mai

MINH HẠNH (báo lao động) 27/05/2026 15:02 (GMT+7)

Hanoi is preparing to consult on the project to extend the Cat Linh - Ha Dong metro line to Xuan Mai, about 20km long, with a total estimated investment of more than 1.5 billion USD.

On May 27, the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board (MRB) said that from June 18-19, the unit will organize a Market Consultation Conference (EME) under the project to invest in the construction of urban railway line No. 2A Cat Linh - Ha Dong extended to Xuan Mai.

The event is expanded to potential domestic and foreign partners with capacity and experience in the field of urban railways.

According to MRB, the project is an important component of phase 1 of the Overall Plan for the development of the Capital's urban railway system, aiming to strengthen traffic connections between the central area of Hanoi and the southwestern cities, while improving access to Xuan Mai satellite city.

It is estimated that this railway line will directly serve about 500,000 people along the corridor.

The total investment of the project is currently estimated at more than 1.5 billion USD. The expected capital source includes a loan from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and counterpart funds from the Vietnamese Government.

The feasibility study report, including the overall technical design, has been implemented since February 2026 and is expected to be completed in October this year.

According to the proposed plan, the entire route of about 20km will be elevated, along the corridor of National Highway 6 which is being expanded. The route is expected to have 12 elevated stations and add 13 new trains, each train consisting of 4 carriages.

The project also builds a new depot near Xuan Mai station. The railway system uses a standard gauge of 1.435mm, integrating automatic train protection systems along the route and on trains, along with an electronic interlock system at all stations.

A representative of MRB said that the project must ensure comprehensive technical and operational compatibility with the existing Cat Linh - Ha Dong route. The organization of market consultations in the investment preparation phase aims to collect comments to optimize the design, bidding package sharing strategy and risk allocation plan.

According to the preliminary plan, the project is expected to apply an EPC contract, including key items such as civil construction, railway system and trains. MRB also plans to select a project management consulting unit to support implementation.

According to the plan, MRB will issue preliminary selection documents for EPC contracts and project management consulting packages in the fourth quarter of 2026," a MRB representative informed.
