Waste-for-porridge exchange model implemented in Quang Ngai
Quang Ngai - From sorted plastic bottles and cans, people in Nghia Giang commune exchange them for hot bowls of porridge, contributing to environmental protection and helping people in need.
On August 28, Ms. Le Thi Bich Lan - Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, Chairwoman of the Nghia Giang Commune Women's Union said that the Nghia Giang Commune Women's Union is implementing the model "Exchange plastic waste, receive a loving breakfast".
The model receives many participating households, they bring sorted trash bags from the family to the village cultural house, where there is a pot of loving porridge to exchange for breakfast porridge.
Not only bringing plastic waste to exchange, many people also proactively bring ca men to receive porridge, limiting the use of more disposable plastic boxes.
Ms. Le Thi Bich Lan - Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, Chairwoman of the Nghia Giang Commune Women's Union said that all plastic bottles, cans, scrap paper... after being collected, the Union will sell them for charity. The amount of money is not large, but accumulated from many people becomes the fund to prepare breakfasts to give to people in difficult circumstances.
To have hot porridge to hand over to people in difficult circumstances in the early morning, preparation work started from 1 am. Women's Union officials, nuns and Buddhists of Dien Long Pagoda together pre-process ingredients, wash rice, prepare vegetables and cook porridge.
A pot of porridge with carrots, sweet potatoes, potatoes, corn and beans not only ensures nutrition but is also the heart of many people. Each person contributes a part to ensure that the bowls of porridge are given at the right breakfast.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tri, a Buddhist at Dien Long Pagoda, shared, "For a long time I have lived in my hometown and seen a lot of bottles and cans thrown out, causing environmental pollution. Now women are coordinating with the pagoda to implement the model, I am a Buddhist at Dien Long Pagoda, I find it very meaningful, so Buddhists enthusiastically participate.
Nun Thich Nu Phuoc Hanh, Abbot of Dien Long Pagoda, expressed that this is a meaningful model when environmental protection is associated with activities to support those who are still in difficulty. Dien Long Pagoda has called on Buddhists to participate and will maintain the model.
Before deploying this model, Nghia Giang commune launched the "Waste Classification at Home" model. The Commune Women's Union has propagated and guided members on how to classify domestic waste and donated 300 trash cans to people.
The implementation of the model "Exchange plastic waste, receive a loving breakfast" is a follow-up step, helping to prevent waste sorting from stopping at propaganda, creating more motivation for people to maintain regularly.
Le Thi Bich Lan - Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, Chairwoman of the Nghia Giang Commune Women's Union said that the "Loving Porridge Pot" model has been implemented in many places, but "Exchange plastic waste, receive a loving breakfast" is a new way of doing things in the locality.
The Association will expand to villages in the area, so that more and more people participate in waste sorting, and at the same time contribute more resources to care for those in difficult circumstances.
