The United Nations always values and prioritizes promoting comprehensive cooperation relations with Vietnam and is ready to provide support in many fields.
On August 25 (New York time), within the framework of a working trip to attend the Vietnam Leadership Program (VLP) and work in the United States, Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Van Thang met with Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junhua.
Faced with the fact that the progress of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) globally as well as in the Asia-Pacific region is slowing down due to the negative impacts of intertwined crises, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Van Thang emphasized the urgent requirement to strengthen political commitments, uphold multilateralism and international cooperation; promote systematic, comprehensive and inclusive solutions to accelerate the progress of implementing SDGs. At the same time, it is necessary to create favorable conditions for developing countries to have fair access to science, technology, knowledge and resources serving development, especially in the context of strong digital transformation and green transformation taking place globally.
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Van Thang affirmed that Vietnam is determined to pursue the path of sustainable development, putting the people at the center, being the subject and the driving force of development, resolutely not leaving anyone behind.
In order to support Vietnam in implementing SDGs, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Van Thang requested the United Nations to continue to accompany and share experiences in responding to climate change; support financial and technological resources to implement climate commitments, develop renewable energy, energy transition and sustainable development of the Mekong Delta; support effective mobilization of ODA capital, focusing on prioritizing science and technology development, digital transformation, climate change adaptation and high-quality human resource training.
Speaking at the reception, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Li Junhua expressed deep impression of the breakthrough and drastic policies and long-term strategic vision that the Vietnamese Government is implementing to promote rapid and sustainable socio-economic development. Mr. Li Junhua especially appreciated Vietnam's commitment and efforts in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, green transformation goals and emission reduction.
Highly appreciating Vietnam's political determination, sense of responsibility and pioneering role at many multilateral forums, Mr. Li Junhua emphasized that Vietnam has always been one of the model, reliable and increasingly important partners in the United Nations agencies.
Mr. Li Junhua affirmed that the United Nations values and prioritizes promoting comprehensive cooperation relations with Vietnam and is ready to promote policy advice, technical assistance, capacity building, sharing global governance knowledge and actively connecting international financial institutions and developed banks to support Vietnam in overcoming development challenges, connecting energy transition goals with climate change adaptation, and realizing sustainable and inclusive development goals.
The Deputy Secretary-General affirmed his readiness to coordinate in 2027 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Vietnam becoming a member of the United Nations; emphasizing that relevant United Nations agencies will continue to be Vietnam's reliable partner in the development path in the coming time.
