4 options to take the metro from Tan Son Nhat airport to Long Thanh
Ho Chi Minh City has been and is studying 4 options to connect Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports by metro, aiming to form a rapid transit network between the two airports.
On May 28, the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board (MAUR) said that Ho Chi Minh City has been and is researching 4 options for connecting Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports by urban railway (metro), aiming to form a smooth, fast and convenient travel journey for people.
Option 1: Metro No. 2 combined with Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway
According to this plan, passengers from Tan Son Nhat airport will move to Ba Queo station to take Metro Line 2 (Tham Luong - Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem). After that, passengers continue to switch to the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line at Thu Thiem station to go to Long Thanh airport.
Option 2: Metro line 6 connects directly to the East
In the second option, passengers travel from Tan Son Nhat airport by Metro Line No. 6 phase 1 (Tan Son Nhat International Airport - Phu Huu).
From Phu Huu intersection, passengers continue to connect with the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line to move to Long Thanh airport.
Option 3: Combine Metro No. 4 and Metro No. 2
With this option, passengers traveling on Metro Line No. 4 (Dong Thanh - Hiep Phuoc) from Tan Son Nhat airport area to Ben Thanh station. Here, passengers switch to Metro Line No. 2 to reach Thu Thiem station, then continue to the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line.
Option 4: Metro connection between Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai
This is the option with the longest connecting journey, combining many metro lines of Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai.
Passengers from Tan Son Nhat airport take Metro Line 2 to Ben Thanh station, then switch to Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien). Next, passengers connect to Metro Line 2 of Dong Nai province and continue to Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway to Long Thanh airport.
According to MAUR, Ho Chi Minh City is currently prioritizing investment in a connecting axis through Metro Line No. 2 combined with Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line.
In which, the Ben Thanh - Tham Luong section and the Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem section are under construction, expected to be completed and put into operation in 2030.
For the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line, the project is expected to start construction before July 2, 2026 and be completed in 2030.
In parallel, Metro Line 6 is also prioritized for investment to supplement the transport corridor, meet travel needs and enhance connectivity between the two airports in the future.
