HCMC prepares to build new Tan Thuan 1 bridge, 120-year-old bridge bans many types of vehicles
Ho Chi Minh City is about to build a new Tan Thuan 1 bridge in combination with expanding Nguyen Tat Thanh street. The 120-year-old bridge will ban many types of heavy trucks to ensure safety.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction has just announced the adjustment of traffic organization on Tan Thuan 1 Bridge - currently traveling in one direction from the South to the center of Ho Chi Minh City.
From December 6, Tan Thuan 1 Bridge banned trucks with a carrying capacity of over 1.5 tons, passenger cars with more than 16 seats, and vehicles with a total weight of over 6 tons. Vehicles over 2.5 m in height are also not allowed to travel through the bridge.
The vehicles under the ban will switch to Tan Thuan 2 Bridge to enter the center of Ho Chi Minh City according to the route: Huynh Tan Phat Street - Nguyen Van Linh Street - Tan Thuan 2 Bridge - Nguyen Tat Thanh Street.
Tan Thuan 1 Bridge was built in 1905, no longer meeting load standards and poses a potential risk to traffic safety.
Faced with this reality, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has submitted to the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee a policy to study and invest in the project to upgrade and expand Nguyen Tat Thanh Street and build a bridge to replace the existing Tan Thuan 1 Bridge.
According to the proposal, the new Tan Thuan 1 bridge will be designed modernly, ensuring load, clearance of boat clearance and suitability for the urban landscape along the river.
Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, from Khanh Hoi Bridge to Tan Thuan Bridge, is expected to be expanded to 30 - 40 m, accommodating 6 - 8 lanes to replace the current 8 - 14 m wide road surface.
The project also includes a Hoang Dieu underpass with a minimum scale of 4 lanes, helping to separate traffic flows and reduce conflicts at intersections that are often overloaded.
The total estimated investment is about VND 2,950 billion, prioritizing the use of public investment capital, which can be combined with the form of public-private partnership (PPP) with appropriate items.
Ho Chi Minh City aims to complete investment preparation in 2026 and construction in the 2027 - 2029 period.
