Developing AI suitable for Vietnamese education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly popular, becoming a powerful assistant in education. However, many opinions say that AI needs to continue to innovate to become more suitable and user-friendly.
Many barriers to using AI in education
Bui Thi Lan - currently a student at the Academy of Journalism and Communication - shared that she often uses AI to come up with ideas for presentations in class, however, AI software cannot provide content that is close to users in Vietnam but mostly information from abroad.
"Usually, when assigned to presentation exercises, I will need to find "hot" topics that are of interest to many Vietnamese people to give analysis and comments about that incident. However, when asking questions to AI, they all receive unsatisfactory results, even though they have entered commands such as "only search for content and news in Vietnam".
In addition, the fact that many AI applications are limited to Vietnamese language causes many difficulties in the use process. Lan also added that when using AI to scan errors in the context, AI will not be able to analyze localized words because it does not fully understand Vietnamese.
Ms. Nguyen Thuy Linh - currently a teacher at a primary school in Ba Dinh district (Hanoi) shared that the application of AI in teaching has brought many positive changes.
"AI is a powerful support tool for me in designing lectures, streamlining textbooks and providing reasonable teaching methods. However, AI cannot help me manage my student list in the most accurate way. AI can process a large number of student lists based on input data, sometimes still creating false information because the students' names overlap" - Ms. Linh shared.
Ms. Linh said that the application of AI in teaching still has many limitations because some necessary tools have high fees, making it difficult to access.
Developing AI for Vietnamese education
Sharing about this issue, Mr. Tran Viet Hung - co-founder of AI for Vietnam (the unit implementing the ViGen Project - AI model to support Vietnamese) said that currently, Vietnamese is used by more than 100 million users, but major language models for education are only trained with less than 1% of data in Vietnamese.
"That is the reason why the output of AI models currently has information value, but is not natural, not fully conveying the value of Vietnamese, so the usefulness is not high, not effective" - Mr. Hung emphasized.
The co-founder of AI for Vietnam said that the organization will build a large-scale, high-quality open-source Vietnamese language dat set to serve the training and evaluation of AI models. This is to develop AI in accordance with the culture, ethics and context of each locality, towards an open source AI ecosystem for Vietnam.
"Developing Vietnamese language databases with open source code helps education projects not spend much time and resources on training and investment. Contributing to making AI models support Vietnamese naturally and comprehensively right from the core, thereby unlocking the potential of artificial intelligence applications in Vietnam" - Mr. Hung commented.
Mr. Dao Trung Thanh - Deputy Director of the Institute of Blockchain Technology and Artificial Intelligence - said that promoting the development of AI applications for Vietnamese people will help Vietnam catch up with the world soon.
"With the current speed of AI development, if we do not take advantage quickly, opportunities will pass. However, this is one of the major challenges due to the need for cooperation from policymakers, research groups, researchers, developers, experts and users. However, if AI is continuously improved and optimized for Vietnamese people, the number of users in Vietnam will not be difficult to compete with other countries. It can even turn AI into a powerful tool for all Vietnamese people and make Vietnam a global AI powerhouse..." - Mr. Thanh emphasized.
