Prime Minister requests to open Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway on June 30

On the afternoon of December 28, during a working trip to the Mekong Delta, Politburo member and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh inspected the construction progress of the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway project through Long Hung commune, Can Tho city.

At the construction site, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh visited, presented gifts and encouraged engineers and workers constructing the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway project.

The Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway construction investment project (phase 1) was approved by the National Assembly in Resolution No. 60/2022/QH15.

The project is 188.2 km long, with a scale of 4 lanes, with a total investment of up to 44,691 billion VND; the required progress is to basically complete the entire route in 2026 and complete and put into synchronous operation the entire project in 2027.

This is an important vertical expressway, passing through An Giang province and Can Tho city (before the merger, An Giang province, Can Tho city, Hau Giang province and Soc Trang province). The project is divided into 4 component projects, with the People's Committees of localities as the managing agency.

Of which, the section passing through An Giang province was technically opened to traffic on December 19. This milestone is not only the joy of local people but also a great spiritual motivation for units under construction along the entire route.

According to the Management Board of Investment Projects for Construction of Traffic and Agricultural Works of Can Tho City, especially at the expressway section through the city (including component projects 2, 3 and 4), with a total length of more than 132 km and an investment capital of VND 31,288 billion, the construction atmosphere is also taking place very urgently.

Previously, the project had faced a major challenge in terms of sand for embankment. However, under the strong direction of the Prime Minister, this difficulty has now been basically resolved, ensuring supply for the construction site. To make up for the time and meet the required progress, contractors have simultaneously deployed a 3-shift, 4-shift construction plan, working day and night.

According to the report, up to now, the project has achieved positive results, with the construction volume reaching about 49%. In particular, the bridge section has reached over 80% with 100 bridges constructed simultaneously.

Inspecting the project site in Long Hung commune (Can Tho city), Prime Minister Minh Chinh affirmed the strategic significance of accelerating progress. Accordingly, the earlier the project is completed, the more economical it is, while helping the locality to soon exploit economic advantages, creating new development space. The Prime Minister requested the project to be technically opened to traffic on June 30, 2026.

To realize this goal, the Prime Minister requested project management boards, contractors and localities to carry out key tasks. Accordingly, rebuild a scientific progress chart, make a detailed plan every month and closely follow the field; review and ensure adequate supply of sand, stone, gravel, and asphalt; prevent the project from having a disruption in supply; take advantage of favorable weather, mobilize the maximum modern forces and equipment to speed up.

In addition to the requirements for progress, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested the project to ensure quality, labor safety, and environmental sanitation; paying special attention to the quality of project management.

The Prime Minister assigned the task to the leaders of Can Tho City to direct inspection and examination, and find solutions for the situation of too many contractors on a short section, while resolutely not allowing negativity and waste; continue to pay attention to ensuring the best rights for people subject to resettlement.

The Prime Minister also requested that the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway project must be completed by January 31, 2026 at the latest to open the entire North - South expressway from Cao Bang to Ca Mau.
