9th grade students in Ho Chi Minh City are ready for the 10th grade exam

Nguyen Thuy Chi, a 9th grade student in District 1, said that at this time, in addition to the 2-session daily schedule at school, she also attends an extra Math class at the center and 3 Math, Literature, and English classes of the whole teacher at home. A total of 8 extra classes per week.

"I have maintained this schedule since the summer of grade 8 until now. studying a lot makes me quite tired, but I'm only 3 months away from finishing, and because I want to pass Le Quy Don High School, I have to try hard," Thuy Chi shared.

According to Thuy Chi, extra learning was suggested by her parents and her parents supported her in finding a class.

Similar to Luong Hoai Thu, a 9th grade student in District 1 also said that he has studied 3 more subjects: Math, Literature and English at a center in Phu Nhuan district with 6 sessions per week (2 sessions per subject).

"I plan to register for admission to the Math class of Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted and want to be a 1st-time student at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School.

These are all top schools with very high benchmark scores, if you want to achieve the above goal, extra study is very necessary. extra learning helps me understand the lesson more deeply," Hoai Thu said.

In the 2024-2025 school year, Ho Chi Minh City has about 90,000 students studying in secondary schools, about 26,000 less than last year.

In addition, according to the roadmap, from the 2025-2026 school year, 4 high schools including: Gia Dinh, Mac Dinh Chi, Nguyen Thuong Hien, Nguyen Huu Huan will stop enrolling in specialized classes.

Last school year, the group of 4 high schools recruited 5-6 specialized classes. Of which, Mac Dinh Chi High School, Gia Dinh enrolls 6 specialized classes and Nguyen Thuong Hien High School, Nguyen Huu Huan enrolls 5 specialized classes (35 students/class).

Mr. Lam Trieu Nghi - Principal of Nguyen Thuong Hien High School, said that when the school no longer conducts 10th grade admissions, the school will propose to enroll 5 more regular classes (45 students/class, equivalent to 225 students).

Thus, the number of junior high school students has decreased, combined with the fact that specialized classes in the school often stop enrolling (this group of schools is expected to enroll about 1,000 more regular class quotas), thereby increasing the number of places to study in grade 10 public high school.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training also said that it is coordinating with high schools to review the ability to receive 10th grade students.

According to the department, this year the enrollment quota will be based on the facilities, teaching staff... of public high schools, not based on the orientation of transferring students after junior high school as in previous years.

"The rate of students admitted to grade 10 this year will increase to at least about 70%, the previous year was 65%. However, the exact number must wait for consideration of places to study in high schools," informed the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City.

This year's 10th grade exam in Ho Chi Minh City will take place on June 6-7, 2025. Candidates take the exam with 3 subjects, including: Math, Literature (120 minutes/subject) and Foreign Language (90 minutes).

Candidates who register to take the exam to enter specialized high schools in the city must take the exam for the 4th subject (specialized subject) with a time of 150 minutes/subject. Each major has its own exam subject according to the junior high school subject program, the exam content ensures the selection of students with talent in that major.

In the 2024-2025 school year, Ho Chi Minh City has about 116,000 students graduating from junior high school, of which more than 98,000 candidates will take the 10th grade entrance exam, about 77,300 of whom will be admitted.
