Hanoi - After nearly 2 months of temporary suspension of operation for repair, Long Bien bridge has completed over 90% of the workload and is expected to reopen to traffic from May 27.

On March 28, 2026, Long Bien Bridge (Hanoi) was temporarily closed to serve major repairs to overcome degraded items, replace the road surface on both sides, and renovate many items on the route.

After nearly 2 months of construction, the project is currently entering the final stage. Units are focusing on completing the final items to prepare for reopening traffic according to the plan on May 27, serving the travel needs of people.

Reporters' records on May 22 show that the bridge repair project has completed more than 90% of the workload. In which, items such as pouring concrete for the bridge deck, constructing drainage ditches, painting and repairing bridge railings have reached 100% progress.

To serve the construction, all vehicles have temporarily stopped traveling through the bridge for nearly 2 months. Units simultaneously deploy many items such as scraping the old bridge deck, treating and reinforcing the foundation structure, and re-asphalting the new asphalt layer.

The railing system, bridge railings and drainage ditches on the road section have also been repaired and completed. Post-construction items are gradually revealed with a bright, flat and uniform concrete layer on both lanes, creating a spacious and clean appearance for the bridge after a period of repair.

Currently, construction units are focusing on completing the final parts such as rust removal of steel structures, cutting road surfaces to prevent cracks... to ensure the progress of reopening traffic according to plan.

Talking to a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong - Deputy Director of Ha Hai Railway Joint Stock Company - said that so far the Long Bien bridge repair project has completed more than 90% of the workload and is closely following the progress to be able to reopen traffic on May 27.

According to Mr. Phuong, the biggest difficulty is the cramped construction site, large vehicles cannot access, forcing the unit to divide into 4 construction teams, organized into many small groups to deploy.

During the Hung Kings Commemoration Day holiday and the April 30 - May 1 holiday, construction teams still maintained 3 consecutive shifts/day to ensure the set progress.

Up to now, the project only has two areas at both ends of the bridge being reinforced to prepare for concrete pouring into the bridge deck, along with rust removal inside the train tracks.

According to the plan, the construction teams will complete from the middle area of the bridge first, then simultaneously deploy gradually to both ends of the bridge to ensure progress as well as synchronization of the entire project.

Before the bridge is put back into operation on May 27, all items will be comprehensively inspected and evaluated to ensure technical and safety requirements. Up to now, all items meet the quality according to the set plan," Mr. Phuong said.

The renovation of Long Bien Bridge not only has the meaning of repairing traffic infrastructure but is also considered an important preparation step for the overall renovation of the historic bridge in the coming time.

This is also one of the key cooperation projects between Vietnam and France, aiming to both preserve historical and cultural values and promote the function of a special symbol in the heart of Hanoi Capital.
