4 northern mountainous provinces have a history of merger
Tuyen Quang and Ha Giang were once merged into one province, named Ha Tuyen. Meanwhile, Bac Kan and Thai Nguyen were merged into Bac Thai province.
According to historical documents, Ha Giang province was established on August 20, 1891, including Tuong Yen province and Vinh Tuy district (Tuyen Quang province). Before the August Revolution in 1945, Ha Giang had 4 provinces and 1 town (Bac Quang, Vi Xuyen, Dong Van, Hoang Su Phi, Ha Giang town).
On March 23, 5, 2019, President Ho Chi Minh signed a decree to merge Ha Giang province into the Viet Bac Autonomous Region.
With Tuyen Quang province on November 4, 1831, when King Minh Menh divided the administrative territory across the country, Tuyen Quang was established as a provincial-level administrative unit.
To date, Tuyen Quang province has been formed for more than 190 years, while Ha Giang province is also over 130 years old.
On December 27, 1975, at the 2nd session, the 5th National Assembly decided to merge Ha Giang and Tuyen Quang provinces into Ha Tuyen province.
After 15 years of merger, Ha Tuyen province has achieved many results in socio-economic development, national security and defense. However, due to the large terrain of Ha Tuyen province, uneven distribution of population, and unfavorable natural conditions, difficulties in the renovation process have occurred.
On that basis, Ha Tuyen province has proposed to the Central Government to separate, allowing Tuyen Quang and Ha Giang to return to the old administrative boundaries.
After the Politburo agreed, on August 12, 1991, at the 9th session, the 8th National Assembly resolved to separate Ha Tuyen into two provinces, named Ha Giang and Tuyen Quang. At the end of September 1991, the separation of Ha Tuyen province into two provinces was basically completed.
On October 1, 1991, the agencies of Tuyen Quang and Ha Giang provinces officially came into operation. This is also considered the date of the re-establishment of these two provinces.
Currently, Tuyen Quang province has an area of over 5,876 km2, with a population of about 800,000 people. Ha Giang province has an area of over 7,929 km2 and a population of nearly 900 thousand people.

Thai Nguyen province has also had 194 years of development. In the 12th year of the Ming Dynasty (1831), Thai Nguyen town became Thai Nguyen province, consisting of 2 Phu and 9 districts.
In 1900, the entire Indochina region issued a decree to separate a part of the land belonging to Thai Nguyen province to establish Bac Kan province with 4 provinces. Up to now, Bac Kan has had 124 years of formation.
During the resistance war against the US, in response to the requirements of political tasks, on April 21, 1965, the National Assembly Standing Committee approved the merger of the two provinces of Bac Kan and Thai Nguyen into Bac Thai province.
Then, on December 29, 1978, at the 4th session, the 6th National Assembly decided that the two districts of Ngan Son and Cho Ra (now Ba Be) of Bac Thai province were separated and merged into Cao Bang province.
In the period of national construction and development, in response to the requirements of the new situation, on November 6, 1996, at the 10th session, the 9th National Assembly issued a Resolution to divide Bac Thai province to re-establish Bac Kan and Thai Nguyen provinces. At the same time, transfer the two districts of Ngan Son and Ba Be of Cao Bang province to Bac Kan province.
January 1, 1997 is considered the day of the re-establishment of Bac Kan and Thai Nguyen provinces.
Currently, Thai Nguyen province has an area of over 3,562 km2 and a population of nearly 1.3 million people. Bac Kan province has an area of 4,859 km2, population of nearly 314 thousand people.
