Phu Quoc has 2 options to reorganize commune-level administrative units

Recently, at the Phu Quoc City Party Committee meeting, the expanded delegation gave opinions on the plan to reorganize commune and ward administrative units according to the direction of the Central Committee and the Kien Giang Provincial Party Committee.

At the conference, Mr. Doan Van Tien, Vice Chairman of Phu Quoc City People's Committee, approved two proposals to reorganize commune-level administrative units.

Option 1: After reorganizing commune and ward administrative units, Phu Quoc City will have 2 more grassroots administrative units, reducing 7 communes and wards compared to before the merger. Reorganize 8 commune-level administrative units into 1 grassroots-level administrative unit. The new name is expected to be Phu Quoc Special Zone. keep Tho Chau commune in its current status, and plan to name it the new Tho Chau Special Zone.

Option 2: When reorganizing commune and ward administrative units, Phu Quoc City will have 5 more grassroots administrative units. Maintaining the current status of Duong Dong ward, it is expected to rename Phu Quoc 1 or Duong Dong special area. Maintain the status of An Thoi ward, plan to re-named Quoc Phu 2 Special Zone or An Thoi; Merge two administrative units of Duong To and Ham Ninh communes, plan to re-named Phu Quoc 3 Special Zone or Duong To; Merge 4 administrative units of Cua Duong, Bai Thom, Ganh Dau and Cua Can communes, plan to re-named Phu Quoc 4 Special Zone or Cua Duong; maintain the status of Tho Chau commune, plan to re-named Tho Chau Special Zone.

The delegates also expressed high consensus on the two options. Especially in option 2, the delegates said that if there are 5 more grassroots administrative units, Duong Dong ward should remain Duong Dong, An Thoi ward should remain An Thoi. Because the names of these two locations are associated with the long history of the Pearl Islands.

Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Nhan also requested: Phu Quoc City needs to closely follow the direction of the Central and the province. In April 2025 and the second quarter, he requested the locality to do a good job of restructuring the apparatus, focusing on promoting propaganda so that the entire political system and people clearly understand the purpose and significance of streamlining the apparatus.

The arrangement of cadres must be sustainable in the future, the selection of cadres must be strict. Continue to pay attention to socio-economic development, especially tourism development because this is a common strength contributing to the development of the province.
