US postpones thuefication for 90 days, agrees to negotiate a counter- trade deal with Vietnam
The US agreed to launch negotiations on a counter- trade deal, including a tax deal, and requested the technical levels of both sides to discuss immediately.
On the afternoon of April 9 (local time), within the framework of his visit to the US as a Special Envoy of General Secretary To Lam to discuss bilateral economic and trade issues, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
According to the Government Newspaper, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc affirmed that Vietnam wishes to work with relevant US agencies to concretize the contents of the exchange between General Secretary To Lam and US President Donald Trump on April 4.
The Deputy Prime Minister suggested that although the US has decided to postpone the imposition of the tariffs for 90 days, the two countries should soon negotiate a bilateral trade agreement to create a long-term framework to promote stable, mutually beneficial economic and trade relations, in line with the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer highly appreciated the visit of Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc as a Special Envoy of General Secretary To Lam, expressing his gratitude and appreciation for Vietnam's positive and proactive steps, demonstrating Vietnam's commitment to promoting Vietnam-US economic and trade relations.
The US Trade Representative affirmed that the US attaches great importance to bilateral relations with Vietnam, wishing to coordinate closely to solve the trade deficit problem, towards increasingly deepening relations in all fields.
The US agreed to launch negotiations on a counterpartition trade deal, which would include tax deals, and requested the two sides' technical levels to conduct immediate exchanges.
The two sides agreed to continue to closely coordinate to promote a favorable business environment, proactively review and consider minimizing non-tax barriers to each other's goods, facilitate US businesses to increase investment and business in Vietnam, strengthen coordination in control and prevent trade fraud.
On April 8-9, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc had meetings with Sen. Bill Hagerty ( replican Party - state of Tennessee), Sen. Steve Daines ( replican Party - state of Montana) and many US organizations and businesses.
The Deputy Prime Minister suggested that the US Congress continue to support and have a voice for the US to remove tax measures on Vietnamese goods, and support the negotiation and exchange between the two countries to soon reach a long-term, sustainable bilateral trade cooperation agreement, meeting the interests of people and businesses of both countries.
The two Senators highly appreciated Vietnam's proactive approach in handling tariff issues with the US; affirmed support for Vietnam-US trade relations on the basis of overall strategic benefits in the bilateral relationship; and believed that Vietnam and the US would soon launch the negotiation process and find solutions to promote stable and mutually beneficial economic and trade relations in the coming time.
During his working in the US, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc also held many meetings with groups of experts, intellectuals, and large US and Vietnamese enterprises, including witnessing the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between Vietjet Airlines Joint Stock Company and Air Finance Company of the US.
