Strong changes in preventing IUU fishing
The Command (BTL) of Coast Guard Region 4 has closely coordinated with forces in preventing and handling against IUU fishing (illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing).
Recently, the Command of Coast Guard Region 4 has directed the Border Guard to carry out missions in the waters bordering Vietnam - Malaysia - Thailand, and ships on duty in the DK area, Tho Chu archipelago, and Phu Quoc island, to strengthen the fight against IUU fishing.
According to the Command of Coast Guard Region 4, in the first 3 months of 2025, the number of Vietnamese fishing vessels exploiting seafood in the Southwest sea violating IUU regulations has decreased significantly, fishing vessels crossing the border into foreign waters has decreased sharply.
Colonel Nguyen Van Tranh - Deputy Commander of the Law of Coast Guard Region 4 - said that the unit has effectively coordinated with forces such as the Navy, Fisheries Control, Border Guard, Police and People's Committees of Kien Giang, Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Ba Ria - Vung Tau provinces in propaganda work to fishermen.At the same time, proactively coordinate to investigate and handle cases, promptly prevent IUU fishing activities right from the time fishing vessels leave port.Coordination, cooperation, information exchange, and situation notification between local forces and the Coast Guard have also been strengthened, contributing to improving the effectiveness of management and handling of violations.
In addition, the Command of Coast Guard Region 4 regularly coordinates closely with propaganda forces to remind ship owners whose vehicles on the field have lost their cruise monitoring signals and show signs of suspicion to go to foreign waters to exploit seafood in a timely and effective manner.Regularly organize conferences to review experiences in implementing the task of combating IUU fishing with localities and cooperative units to improve the effectiveness of the task.
On the field, the Command of Coast Guard Region 4 organized forces and vehicles to be on duty 24/24 hours and increased patrols and controls, especially at night as well as during bad weather, to prevent subjects from taking advantage of cross-border to foreign waters to illegally exploit seafood.
In addition to the ships of the Coast Guard Region 2 Command, there are ships of the Coast Guard Region 2 Command, Coast Guard Region 3 Command, ships of Naval Region 2, and ships of the Kien Giang Provincial Military Command participating in coordinating against IUU fishing, thereby fully promoting the sense of responsibility in maintaining and strictly implementing the law.
Mr. Pham Quoc Su - Deputy Director of the Department of Justice of Ca Mau province - said: "The Command of Coast Guard Region 4 has implemented many creative and effective solutions in the exploration and detection of many highly complex violations.Closely coordinate with agencies and departments of Ca Mau province, especially in providing information, handling violations, and doing a good job of communication activities for fishermen, thereby preventing and minimizing the situation of Vietnamese fishing vessels violating IUU fishing in the Southwest Sea Area".
The Southwest sea area has a large volume of active ships, adjacent to many countries in the region.To exploit aquatic products sustainably and responsibly, in addition to patrolling, inspecting and controlling law enforcement forces at sea, it is always necessary to have the close coordination of departments, branches, unions, and local authorities in propaganda, education and resolutely handling violations.Each fisherman who participates in fishing must strictly comply with the law and will join the whole country in removing the yellow card warned by the EC.
