Ho Chi Minh City will start construction of 5 key metro lines in 2026

Metro No. 2 (Ben Thanh - Tham Luong section and Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem section)

Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh - Tham Luong) has a total length of nearly 11.27 km, including 10 underground stations, 1 elevated station and 1 Tham Luong depot. The route starts at Ben Thanh Station and ends at Tham Luong depot, passing through 14 wards in the central area and the Northwest gateway of Ho Chi Minh City.

The project was approved in 2010, expected to become a large-volume transport axis connecting the city center with the Tan Binh - Tan Phu area. However, due to problems with capital, procedures and site clearance, the project has been repeatedly delayed.

After converting capital from ODA to public investment, Ho Chi Minh City is organizing project adjustments. According to the plan, the route will start construction on January 15, 2026, construction and equipment installation in the 2026 - 2030 period, expected to operate in December 2030.

The total investment is expected to be adjusted from VND 47,891 billion to about VND 57,000 billion, an increase of nearly VND 10,000 billion due to additional construction scale, technology upgrades and price inflation factors.

Metro section No. 2 from Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem is 6.2 km long, all of which are underground. The route starts at Ben Thanh Station, goes along Ham Nghi Street, crosses the Saigon River to Thu Thiem Urban Area and continues along Mai Chi Tho Street to Thu Thiem Station.

The project is being proposed by Truong Hai Group ( Thaco) to be invested in under the PPP method, BT contract type. According to Thaco, the route has been determined to be stable, convenient in terms of land, allowing quick implementation.

The enterprise recommends implementing the overall technical design (FEED) soon, aiming to start construction on April 30, 2026 and complete on April 30, 2030.

Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line

The Thu Thiem - Long Thanh line is identified as an urban railway, 42 km long, including 20 stations and 1 depot. The route starts at Thu Thiem station (An Khanh ward, Ho Chi Minh City), ends at Long Thanh airport (Dong Nai province).

The total preliminary investment is about VND84,753 billion, of which the cost of compensation, support and resettlement is about VND5,504 billion.

The project is also being studied by Thaco for an investment plan, expected to start on June 30, 2026 and be completed in 2030.

When combined with Metro Line 2, the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh route will form a transportation corridor connecting directly Tan Son Nhat airport - the center of Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh airport, contributing to reducing pressure on road traffic.

Two metro lines connecting Binh Duong area

The Binh Duong New City Metro Line - Suoi Tien is 29.01 km long, all of which are elevated, with 17 stations, with a total investment of VND 46,725 billion.

The route starts from the center of Binh Duong New City, ends at Suoi Tien Bus Station, directly connecting to Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien). This metro line helps create a large, stable, and effective transportation axis between the central urban area and the satellite urban area.

The Thu Dau Mot - Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line is 21.87 km long, running entirely on elevated ground, with about 13 stations, with a total investment of about VND53,000 billion.

The route will directly connect Thu Dau Mot ward with neighboring areas and the center of Ho Chi Minh City, reducing traffic congestion on the overloaded National Highway 13. This route will seamlessly connect with metro No. 3 (Hiep Binh Phuoc - An Ha) to form a central transport axis.

These two lines have just been added by Ho Chi Minh City to the appendix attached to Resolution 188 of the National Assembly on piloting a number of specific mechanisms and policies, especially to develop the urban railway network in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, thereby speeding up the implementation progress.

Metro No. 6 (Inner Ring Road)

Metro No. 6 (inner Ring Road) has a total length of 53.8 km, including 45.6 km underground, 8.2 km elevated, with 38 stations. The route is divided into 3 sections, surrounding the inner city of Ho Chi Minh City.

According to the plan, the Phu Huu - Ba Queo section will be prioritized to start construction in 2026 due to the direct connection of 3 terminals T1, T2, T3 of Tan Son Nhat airport. This section also connects with Metro Line 2 at Ba Queo Station and the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh route at Phu Huu Station, creating a strategic traffic axis between the two largest airports in the South.
