Calculating plans to increase the capacity of hydropower and coal power plants
The Deputy Prime Minister requested specific plans to ensure national energy security, and calculate plans to increase the capacity of hydropower and coal-fired power plants.
On March 5, at the Government Headquarters, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son chaired the first meeting of the Task Force to ensure energy security in the face of the complex developments of the military conflict in the Middle East (the Task Force).
The working group was decided to be established by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on March 4, 2026, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son.
The Task Force has the task of assisting the Prime Minister in directing, urging, harmonizing, and coordinating between ministries and sectors to solve tasks related to ensuring energy security in the crisis situation in the Middle East.
At the meeting, members of the Task Force reported updates on the developments of the military conflict in the Middle East; the situation of production, supply, and import of gasoline, oil, and coal of Vietnam; discussed short-term and long-term measures to ensure energy security to serve the growth target of 10% or more in 2026 and the following years.

After listening to the statements of the working group members, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son assessed that the situation is developing very quickly and complicatedly, having a great impact on countries, especially in the energy sector.
The Deputy Prime Minister assigned the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the standing agency of the Task Force, to coordinate with the Government Office to develop the Operating Regulations of the Task Force according to the motto of being concise, clearly defining the responsibilities of each member of the Task Force, flexible in coordination and exchange mechanisms, completing this task in the afternoon of March 5; reporting to the Prime Minister the content of the first meeting of the Task Force.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs closely monitors and updates the energy policy responses of countries; coordinates with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and ministries and agencies that are members of the Working Group in exchanging with partners to diversify energy import sources.
The Deputy Prime Minister requested that there must be very specific plans to ensure national energy security, including calculating plans to increase the capacity of hydropower and coal-fired power plants; diversifying coal import sources; and maximizing domestic fuel sources.
