14th Party Congress: Development orientation for Vietnam in the next decade

The 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam is a milestone of great significance, both in domestic political development and the country's future orientation in the regional and global context.

The importance of the Congress is first of all to not only affirm the current direction, but also to choose a development orientation that will affect Vietnam throughout the next decade.

That was the opinion of Mr. Milos Kosy - Chairman of the Czech - Vietnam Friendship Association - during the discussion in the Czech Republic before the particularly important political event of Vietnam, taking place from January 19-25, in Hanoi.

According to Mr. Milos Kosy, the Congress has strategic significance for the next stage of Vietnam's development; at the same time, it plays an important role in personnel work and ensuring the continuity of the operating apparatus, consolidating the ideological foundation and identity of the Party.

In addition, the Congress also has foreign and regional significance, thereby sending a clear signal about the role that Vietnam wishes to take on in Southeast Asia in the long term.

Regarding the leadership role of the Communist Party of Vietnam as proven by time, Mr. Milos Kosy said that the past 40 years, since the Doi Moi policy was initiated in 1986, can be considered a period of great historical significance for the development and stability of the State of Vietnam.

According to him, the biggest contribution of the Communist Party of Vietnam in this period is to soon identify the limitations of the centralized planned economic model, thereby making practical reform decisions, converting to a socialist-oriented market economy.

That transformation is clearly demonstrated through opening up foreign trade and investment, significantly reducing widespread poverty, maintaining rapid growth of gross domestic product (GDP) for decades, promoting industrialization and significantly improving the living standards of the majority of people.

According to Mr. Milos Kosy, these results show the ideological flexibility of the Communist Party of Vietnam in adjusting guidelines to suit development practices.

Another important contribution of the Party is to ensure political stability and continuity in national governance. This factor facilitates long-term strategic planning in the fields of infrastructure, education, and industrialization, while helping Vietnam avoid chaos or collapse as has occurred in some post-socialist countries. The stability and predictability of the system also contribute to strengthening the confidence of foreign investors in the investment environment in Vietnam.

Mr. Milos Kosy said that protecting national sovereignty and implementing foreign policies is also an important area of activity of the Communist Party of Vietnam. In the complex international context, the Party has skillfully balanced relations with major powers, both maintaining relations with China and developing strategic partnerships with the US, the European Union (EU), Japan and Russia, while proactively expanding political and diplomatic influence within the framework of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), in parallel with protecting national sovereignty.

This approach contributes to strengthening the image of the Communist Party of Vietnam as a steadfast force protecting national interests, a factor of special significance in the context of post-colonial Vietnam.

Regarding bilateral relations, Mr. Milos Kosy emphasized that Vietnam and the Czech Republic (formerly Tiep Khac) have established diplomatic relations since 1950. During Vietnam's resistance wars to save the country, this relationship was strengthened on the foundation of solidarity and continued to develop in many fields such as politics, education and culture.

In the past, Tiep Khac has supported Vietnam through providing materials, equipment and creating conditions for Vietnamese students to study, thereby contributing to the formation of a large Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic, currently one of the largest foreign communities in this country.

Notably, in January 2025, the Vietnam - Czech Republic relationship was officially upgraded to a Strategic Partnership during the official visit of Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to the Czech Republic.

This is the first time Vietnam has established a strategic partnership with a country in Central and Eastern Europe, built on the principles of mutual respect, sovereignty and cooperation. The bilateral relationship currently focuses on political dialogue, economic cooperation, defense, security and scientific cooperation.

Two-way trade has grown strongly, reaching a record of more than 4 billion USD in 2024 and 2025, making the Czech Republic the leading partner of Vietnam in Central and Eastern Europe, while Vietnam is an important partner of the Czech Republic in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

On behalf of the Czech - Vietnam Friendship Association, the oldest and largest friendship organization for Vietnam in the Czech Republic, and as a personal person, Mr. Milos Kosy sincerely sent his best wishes to the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam for a great success.

He emphasized that this is a particularly important event in Vietnam's political and social life, marking a new milestone in continuous efforts to stabilize stability, promote economic development, strengthen social cohesion and enhance Vietnam's position in the international arena.
