LD25001: 86-year-old mother struggles to take care of her son with cancer
Kien Giang - The old mother was exhausted and could only manage to take care of her son with terminal cancer.
In a temporary house that has deteriorated, with little rain or shine, located deep in Xeo Duoc 1 Hamlet, Dong Yen Commune, An Bien District (Kien Giang), the situation is full of sympathy for the 86-year-old mother. Mrs. Nguyen Thi Every day, she bled her tears as she watched her son, Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong (49 years old), every minute fighting cancer of the throat.
Mrs. Bay's family is a near-poor household, without any valuable land or assets. Previously, Mr. Cuong was still healthy, working for a living to take care of his elderly mother. But now, his health is exhausted, each pain of his is like tearing the old mother's heart.
At this age, Mrs. Bay should have been given a home to her children and grandchildren, but all the family burden was on her shoulders. "I'm so old and weak, I can't do anything. Seeing her child in pain without money for treatment, I felt so sad, I could only cry," Mrs. Bay choked up.
"My son's love disease is very serious, I don't know how long it will last, but I think that even at my old age, I don't know how many days I can live to take care of him. Thinking about it, I felt helpless, bitter, and didn't know how to overcome it," Mrs. Bay said with tears in her eyes.
Difficulties and poverty not only made her helpless in the face of her son's illness but also robbed her of the opportunity to study. Vo Van Nghia, 14 years old, had to stop studying to help his family.
Mrs. Bay said that Nghia's mother had left work far away many years ago, leaving Nghia to take care of her and Mr. Cuong. But since Mr. Cuong fell ill, Nghia also had to drop out of school to help with housework.
"He was young and had to work hard, he didn't go to school, I felt sorry for him but I don't know what to do now. In my heart, I really want money to treat my child even though I know there are no more opportunities, I hope to have money to send him to school, and since I am old, it's okay," Mrs. Bay choked up.
Mr. Phan Van Phe, Secretary of Dong Yen Commune Youth Union, said: Currently, the whole family depends on Mrs. Bay's monthly elderly allowance (500,000 VND/month). The sympathetic neighborhood also helps and supports the family with rice. Local authorities and mass organizations have tried to mobilize support for Mrs. Bay's family through social security funds. However, with the high cost of cancer treatment and daily life, that support only helped Mrs. Bay's family overcome the difficulties temporarily.
"We really hope that the kind-hearted people from near and far can join hands to help Mrs. Bay's family overcome this difficult period as well as help Nghia have a better future," said Mr. Phe.
At the end of the year, family members are busy preparing for Tet, but for Mrs. Bay's family, worrying about every meal is also a burden, the joy of gathering is too far away.
