Vietnam - Cambodia Prime Ministers agree to soon sign the Agreement on Border Management

The Prime Ministers of Vietnam and Cambodia held talks and agreed to soon sign the Agreement on Border Gate Management and the Agreement on Border Management Regulations.

VNA reported that on the morning of December 8, on the occasion of the opening ceremony of the Tan Nam International Border Gate (Tay Ninh province) - Meun Chey (Prey Veng province) co-chaired by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Politburo member and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Prime Minister Hun Manet held talks.

Looking back at 2025, the two Prime Ministers both stated that over the past year, political and foreign relations have been continuously consolidated and strengthened.

The two Prime Ministers highly appreciated the significance of the opening of Tan Nam - Meun Chey international border gate in increasing solidarity, economy, trade and people-to-people exchanges; affirmed their determination to continue perfecting the border gate system, upgrading cross-border traffic infrastructure, creating new momentum for regional economic development.

In addition to the positive aspects of the opening of border gates, the two Prime Ministers both agreed that the two sides need to coordinate well in managing and maintaining security and order in border areas, preventing cross-border crimes, smuggling and illegal activities, and promptly signing the Agreement on Border Gate Management and the Agreement on Border Management Regulations to facilitate border trade and border gate management, meeting the development goals of the two countries in the new period.

The two sides agreed to closely coordinate to develop bilateral relations more strongly, consistently implement the principle of not allowing hostile forces to use the territory of one country to sabotage the other; maintain security and order in border areas, prevent and combat cross-border crimes and online fraud; coordinate to fight against distorted arguments, fake news and untrue information of hostile forces to incite, sabotage and divide Vietnam - Cambodia relations.

The two sides agreed to focus on creating a breakthrough in economic cooperation, while developing border gates and trade infrastructure; striving to soon bring bilateral trade turnover to 20 billion USD in the near future.

The two Prime Ministers emphasized the importance of maintaining the two countries' borders in peace, stability, cooperation and sustainable development; promoting negotiations and resolving about 16% of border crossings that have not yet been completed, coordinating border management both on land and at sea in the spirit of understanding, mutual respect and in accordance with international law.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also suggested that the Cambodian side continue to pay attention to solving the problem of legal status so that people of Vietnamese origin in Cambodia can stabilize their lives, actively contributing to the prosperous development of Cambodia and the friendly relations between the two countries.

Discussing the tension on the Cambodia - Thailand border, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that Vietnam always cares about, closely follows the situation and will continue to contribute to peaceful solutions to resolve tensions, calling on Thailand and Cambodia to restrain, dialogue, respect each other's legitimate interests and comply with peace agreements.
