The whole country has over 10,092,000 trade union members
The work of developing union members and establishing grassroots trade unions has been identified by the Vietnam Trade Union as a particularly important task, focusing resources on implementation with many effective mechanisms, solutions and breakthrough approaches.
New development of over 2.2 million union members
According to the VGCL, in the context of many difficulties, but with the efforts of trade union levels, from the beginning of 2024 to May 2026, the whole country developed over 2.2 million new union members, with over 15,000 new grassroots trade unions/trade unions; in particular, trade union levels have paid attention to developing union members, organizing grassroots trade unions in the informal sector, admitting 53,330 new trade union members and establishing 577 grassroots trade unions in the informal sector.
As of the end of May 2026, the whole country has 10,092,228 trade union members and 62,061 grassroots trade unions/trade unions, of which the informal sector has 98,899 trade union members and 1,023 grassroots trade unions.
Trade union cadre work is focused on, ensuring the leadership of the Party, implemented according to procedures and regulations. The restructuring of the trade union cadre team associated with staff streamlining is focused on unified and synchronous implementation along with the process of implementing the arrangement of the organizational apparatus system.
The work of training and fostering trade union officials at all levels continues to be invested in and innovated, gradually meeting the requirements in the context of increasingly complex and diverse labor relations, contributing to improving the skills and professional skills of trade union officials at all levels, especially the team of grassroots trade union chairmen.
At the central level, phase 1 rearranges and restructures from 9 departments/units to 6 departments/units; phase 2 rearranges and restructures from 6 departments/units to 2 special departments directly advising on trade union work and directly under the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front. Where there are businesses - there are union members
Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Ms. Le Thi Duc - Vice President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Industry and Trade (VGCL) - said that in the past period, VGCL has had many innovations in content and methods of operation, promoting the development of union members and establishing trade union organizations.
Accordingly, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour has established a Steering Committee for developing union members and establishing grassroots trade unions; developed a Plan for developing union members and establishing grassroots trade unions for the period 2024 - 2028; directed trade union levels to survey, review, and grasp the production and business situation, developments in labor and union members, and forecast development trends of enterprises, statistics and reports on the number of union members, and fluctuations in the increase and decrease of union members and grassroots trade unions.
In the period 2023-2025, 8,143 union members have been developed, in addition, the actual number of union members has decreased by 5,162 union members. Deploying information updates of 80,765 union members to the union member management software system of the VGCL.
According to Ms. Le Thi Duc, in the coming time, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour will continue to pay attention to and develop union members, establish grassroots trade unions and youth unions, focusing on increasing quantity and valuing quality with the motto "where there are businesses - there are union members". Coordinate labor review in enterprises; directly and indirectly approach through information channels to introduce to employees to understand the benefits of being a Trade Union member; commit to accompanying and caring for union members and employees in enterprises.
Focus on developing union members and establishing grassroots trade unions in non-state-owned enterprises. Improve the quality of grassroots trade union activities, innovate the content of activities and trade union activities, apply digital transformation in union member management; effectively evaluate and classify the quality of grassroots trade union activities, focusing on the results of implementing key tasks of each trade union level.
