Charitable activities help An Giang border commune change the face
An Giang - Charity activities in Phu Huu commune are contributing to solving practical difficulties, creating motivation for people in border areas to rise up.
Phu Huu commune (An Giang province) borders Cambodia, where people's lives are still difficult. Most of the people make a living by small-scale farming and fishing, unstable income, depending heavily on the weather and market.
In recent years, Phu Huu commune has become a familiar destination for many charity activities. Gifts including rice, noodles, necessities... are given regularly and promptly to help people overcome difficult times. One of the most noticeable changes in Phu Huu commune is the rural transportation system. Previously, many inter-hamlet roads were seriously degraded, with bumpy road surfaces and many potholes, making it difficult for people to travel and transport agricultural products.

Mr. Vo Van Tung (residing in Vinh Phuoc Hamlet, Phu Huu Commune, An Giang Province) said: "The inter-hamlet road is degraded, making it very difficult for people to travel. There are sections that are severely damaged but the local budget is still limited. From that reality, in 2023, the road patching team was established. Seeing us doing it, the people also joined hands to contribute funds to buy stone and cement. Thanks to that, road patching is maintained more regularly".
According to Mr. Tung, since the early days, only a few hundred meters of roads have been repaired, now many concrete roads have been renovated and upgraded, making people's travel more convenient. Open roads not only reduce transportation costs but also create conditions for more convenient trading and business.
" Only when the road is good can people do business. Paving the way is to help people in the long term, not just provide temporary support, Mr. Tung shared.
Along with repairing traffic infrastructure, many charity activities in Phu Huu also focus on supporting housing for households in difficult circumstances. Temporary houses with warped walls have been gradually replaced with solid corrugated iron roofs. Although the value of each house is not large, for people in the border area, it is a dream of settling down.
Ms. Ho Thi My Trinh (residing in Vinh Phuoc Hamlet, Phu Huu Commune) confided: Previously, when it rained and the house leaked, it was very inconvenient to do daily activities. Thanks to the support, I have a decent house to live in. Now I can work with peace of mind, no longer worry about storms and floods".
Mr. Tran Van Pho - Head of the Board of Directors of Hoa Hao Buddhist Sangha in Phu Huu commune (An Giang province) - said that in 2025, the Board of Directors has rebuilt and repaired 45 houses for households with difficult housing circumstances. From the beginning of 2026 to now, the unit has continued to support the construction of 5 new houses for people in the area.
In addition, in 2025, the Executive Committee of Hoa Hao Buddhist Sangha in Phu Huu commune also organized the patching of about 15 km of inter-hamlet rural roads, with a total cost of more than 118 million VND, from the mobilization of contributions from people and philanthropists.

Ms. Lam Thi Ngoc Giau - Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Phu Huu commune (An Giang province) - said that the work of mobilizing and coordinating charity activities in the area has always received special attention from the locality. "We identify charity activities as an important social resource, contributing to the state's care of social security. However, the activities must go in the right direction, to the right subjects and be associated with the actual needs of the people, Ms. Giau emphasized.
According to Ms. Giau, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Phu Huu commune plays a bridging role between volunteer groups and people, and at the same time advises Party committees and authorities in selecting priority projects and tasks such as road repair, house construction, and livelihood support.
"Thanks to the cooperation of benefactors and the Board of Directors of Hoa Hao Buddhist Sangha in Phu Huu commune, the appearance of Phu Huu commune is increasingly improving. People are more excited and confident in social security policies and the spirit of community solidarity in border areas, Ms. Giau assessed.
