In a small house deep in My Hoa residential group, Thuong Hong ward, Hung Yen province, everything is simple to the point of being deserted. Old walls have faded with time, furniture has nothing of value. The house, which was already poor, has become even more desolate since the death of Bui Thanh Dat's mother (15 years old).

Last March, Dat's mother, Mrs. Bui Thi Hung, breathed her last breath after more than a year of fighting rectal cancer. That woman devoted all her strength to raising her child, until her illness no longer gave her a chance to stay.

Dat has not had a father since childhood. For 15 years of growing up, he only had his mother as his only support. The two mothers and sons lived relying on each other with a few acres of rice fields and hard working days.

Dat remembers vividly the days of following his mother to the fields. His mother taught him every little thing, from packing rice bags, carrying rice, carrying rice home to how to take care of each rice field. At that time, he simply thought that he was helping his mother to be less vất vả.

Now, every morning when he wakes up, there is no longer the voice of his mother calling him, no longer the meal his mother prepared, and no longer anyone waiting for him after each school day. Only silent memories are present in every corner of the house. Every time he misses his mother, Dat tells himself that his mother is only in a very far place and is still watching him.

Dreams must be put aside

Right next to Dat's house is the residence of his grandmother. Over 90 years old, the old and weak grandmother can only slowly lean on a cane and step by step to take care of her grandchild whenever possible.

Occasionally, she would come over to cook a simple meal for Dat. Her hands already trembling with age were still trying to nurture her orphaned grandchild.

Mentioning Dat, she wiped away the tears rolling down her wrinkled face. The old woman could not say anything other than her boundless love for her grandchild. At the age that she should be cared for by her children and grandchildren, she was still deeply worried about the future of her only grandchild.

Dat broke his leg twice due to an accident. Up to now, he still does not have the conditions to have surgery to remove the nail from the bone. Looking at his peers excitedly talking about future plans, Dat also has many dreams for himself. However, he just smiled and silently said: "I know my circumstances do not allow it".

Ms. Pham Thi Xuan - Dat's aunt - said that after his mother passed away, his aunts, uncles, and aunts all tried to share, each contributing a little so that Dat could have the conditions to continue studying. However, everyone has their own life and circumstances, so help only partially alleviates the immediate difficulties.

We just hope he can continue to study. He is obedient, hardworking and knows how to think for others from a young age" - Ms. Xuan shared.

Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Dao Dinh Bau - Deputy Head of My Hoa Residential Group - said that Bui Thanh Dat's situation is very difficult. His mother passed away after a long time of treatment for a serious illness, he has no father and is currently living alone in the old house.

Local authorities and people in the residential group always care for and encourage him, but his life is still very difficult and needs the joint help of the community.

At the age of 15, Dat should only care about studying, playing and nurturing his dreams. But family upheavals forced him to mature too early.

Every afternoon, the boy still quietly returns to the house without his mother's shadow. The longing never fades, but he still tries to study, tries to live well as his mother once told him.
