LD26179: Young mother burdens four children after the tragedy of losing her husband, young child carrying many diseases

These days, the small house of Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan (born in 1995), in hamlet 5, Cat Tien 2 commune (Lam Dong province) has become quieter after the passing of her husband. Losing the pillar of the family, Ms. Lan now carries the life of her four young children alone.

Previously, Ms. Lan's husband was a farmer, with unstable income. After a period of fighting against liver failure, kidney failure and bloodstream infections, he was hospitalized for treatment but did not survive after only 5 days. The pain of losing her husband had not yet subsided when the burden of taking care of four young children fell heavily on the shoulders of the mother who was just over 30 years old.

My husband passed away too suddenly, until now I still can't believe it's true. He is the support of the mother and children, now only I bear the burden of raising four children, of which two are sick. Many nights watching my children sleep, I only know how to cry and tell myself to try my best, just hoping that my children will have enough health to continue growing up, to go to school like other children," Ms. Lan said emotionally.

Among Ms. Lan's four children, the eldest daughter, To Nguyen Hong Hoai (born in 2015), was diagnosed with heart defects when she was still in her mother's womb. It was thought that her condition could improve when she grew up. However, during a recent re-examination at Children's Hospital 2, doctors determined that the disease was still present and needed continued monitoring and treatment.

The second daughter, To Nguyen Hong Hien (born in 2018), is currently in 2nd grade. She is very understanding, often takes advantage of helping her mother look after her younger sibling, doing small housework to ease some of her burden.

The third child, To Nguyen Hong Hoan (born in 2020), has intellectual disability, slow absorption, and does not know how to read or write like his peers. After being advised by teachers and the school to take her to a specialized examination, Ms. Lan realized that her child needed intervention and long-term monitoring.

However, what worries Ms. Lan the most is her youngest daughter To Nguyen Hong Nhi (born in 2021). When she was just two months old, she experienced abnormal convulsions. The family took her child to many hospitals, and the journey to find treatment opportunities for her child lasted for many years.

Doctors diagnosed Hong Nhi with epilepsy, cerebral palsy and comprehensive developmental delay. Up to now, although she is 5 years old, she still cannot sit on her own, stand on her own, or live like normal children. All eating, hygiene, and care completely depend on the mother.

Currently, Hong Nhi is still undergoing long-term monitoring and treatment at the Department of Neurology, Children's Hospital 2. Every month, if her health is stable, Ms. Lan still has to take her child for re-examination and buy medicine outside as prescribed by the doctor with a cost of about 800,000 VND. Plus travel, milk, diapers and living expenses, each month the family has to spend about 2-3 million VND. For prolonged hospitalizations, that amount of money increases many times over.

For the past three years, almost all of Ms. Lan's time has been spent in the hospital. She cannot go to work because she has to be on duty to take care of her children day and night. The family's already meager income is now gone after her husband's death.

Although life is full of difficulties, the children in the family are still the motivation for the young mother to continue trying. She always hopes to have more conditions to treat Hong Nhi, take Hong Hoai for a full heart examination and help Hong Hoan have early intervention to have the opportunity to integrate with friends...
