LD26010: A hard-working wife takes care of her husband with a traumatic brain injury for more than 20 years in poverty
A traffic accident took her husband's health and memory, pushing the whole family of Mr. Pham Van Luat into a series of difficult days of poverty...
Mr. Pham Van Luat (born in 1976), Chuong Duong commune (Hanoi), used to be the main breadwinner of his family. However, a traffic accident that occurred more than 20 years ago turned his life around. The severe traumatic brain injury left long-term sequelae, causing Mr. Luat to live in a state of being forgetful and unable to work or take care of himself.
Mr. Luat's family currently lives in an old house that has deteriorated over time. This is the only asset and also the home of the whole family for many years, despite the rain, sunshine and the mounting shortages due to illness and poverty.

Since Mr. Luat had an accident, the family burden has been on the shoulders of Ms. Pham Thi Que Anh (born in 1974) - Mr. Luat's wife. Without a stable job, Mrs. Que Anh works all kinds of jobs to make a living, who would hire her to do anything, from farming, weeding to plowing in the village. Previously, when she was young, she was attached to hand-carving, but now she is old, has weak hands, and no longer has enough strength to do the job.
According to relatives, Mr. Luat's health has seriously declined since the accident. He often suffered from seizures, pain in bones and joints, and unstable memory. There were days when he almost did not recognize relatives in the family. My every activity requires someone to look after me, Ms. Que Anh shared
Mrs. Que Anh's income is unstable every day. On average, if healthy, she earns about 1 million VND per month; sometimes when the wind is blows, she has bone and joint pain, dizziness, and headaches, she can hardly go to work, and her income is almost zero. Meanwhile, the family only receives a social allowance of about 500,000 VND/month, not enough to cover living expenses and medicine.

Not only taking care of her daily food, Mrs. Que Anh also has to take her husband to the hospital regularly. Every month, Mr. Luat has to go to the doctor 2-3 times; each treatment cost can be up to several million VND. "There are months when I can't get my money back, I just dare to buy medicine to drink in moderation," Ms. Que Anh said choking up
Mr. Luat's two sons, Pham Tien Tai, 10 years old and Pham Tuan Tu, 6 years old - are still of school age. Understanding the family situation, the children were soon aware of their self-reasonable study, were dependent, and helped their mothers with small things in the house. "I just hope my children can go to school fully, and will be less miserable than their parents in the future," said Mr. Luat.
Although Mr. Luat's brothers and relatives live nearby, they all have their own families and are in difficulty, so they can only visit, encourage, and not help much financially. Mr. Luat's family life is therefore still winding around the cycle of illness and deprivation.
Talking to Lao Dong reporter, Mr. Pham Van Luan - Head of Mai Xa village, Chuong Duong commune said that Mr. Pham Van Luat's family is one of the cases with particularly difficult circumstances in the locality. After a traffic accident, Mr. Luat suffered a traumatic brain injury, lost the ability to work, all the burden of living, treating and raising two young children was on his wife's shoulders, working for hire, and his income was unstable.
According to Mr. Pham Van Luan, the family's income mainly depends on the wife's unstable job, while the cost of treatment for Mr. Luat arises frequently, sometimes having to go to the hospital many times a month. "Although receiving social allowances, the support level is still low, unable to meet living and treatment needs. The locality always monitors, encourages and supports within the reach of capacity, but for the family to truly overcome this difficult period, it is necessary to have the cooperation and help of the community, said Mr. Luan.
