Workers seek short sleep under the bridge to have the ability to work
Hanoi Under the bridge, short sleep becomes a precious quiet space, giving workers more strength to continue making a living in the city.
Temporary sleep in the streets
At noon, under the bridge on Pham Hung Street (Hanoi), a few people were lying still on the cement floor or leaning on their backs on a motorbike. Amidst the loud noises of the above vehicles, the road is suffocating, but for freelance workers, this is still a place to take a few minutes of sleep.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Luong - a shipper who also runs a motorbike taxi - shared that every day, he starts work at 6am, wandering all over the streets. At noon, instead of going to his rented room to rest, he chose a familiar bridge underpass as his backrest.
"Riding a motorbike taxi with technology requires taking advantage of every corner. When I returned to the motel and returned, I lost customers and ran out of gas. Lying temporarily under the bridge for about 20 minutes, sweating my back wet, but it was better than not sleeping, said Mr. Luong.
According to Mr. Luong, that steady sleep at noon sometimes does not help him stay fully alert, but it is an indispensable "source of energy". "Driving continuously, with blurred vision without sleep can easily cause danger. Take a break and sleep in a cool place. Even though it was only a few dozen minutes, I woke up and felt much less stressed, he confided.
never fully sleep
Not always under bridges, sidewalks are a safe place. The danger of dust, mosquito bites, noise, or even traffic danger is always lurking. One driver said that after falling asleep many times, he was reminded by the authorities to rest and park in a no-parking area.

Mr. Nguyen Van Binh - a technology motorbike taxi driver - shared that despite knowing the inconveniences and risks, many people still have no other choice. The rented room is a few kilometers from the workplace, returning from retirement and then going out takes time and money. A coffee shop or restaurant with seats must also pay a fee.
"Only sidewalks and bridges are free. Where to sleep is not important, even though it is hard, at least save a little to save, said Mr. Binh.
He added that once, while sleeping under the bridge on Pham Hung Street, he was reminded by the Traffic Police for parking in violation of regulations. I know it is not right to park a car here, but at that time I was so tired, I just wanted to rest for about 15 - 20 minutes and then go back to work. In fact, I am also worried about being fined, but if I don't take advantage of sleeping, I can easily sleep after driving, which is very dangerous. Seeing me as a freelancer and working hard, they just reminded me, said Mr. Binh.
