For diabetes, how many days will you be given medicine?
People with diabetes can be prescribed outpatient medicine by a doctor for more than 30 days, up to 90 days, according to current regulations of the Ministry of Health.
According to the Ministry of Health's regulations in Circular No. 39/2024/TT-BYT dated November 17, 2024 amending and supplementing a number of articles of Circular No. 35/2016/TT-BYT dated September 28, 2016 of the Minister of Health promulgating the List and rates, payment conditions for medical technical services within the scope of benefits of health insurance participants, HbA1c (blood) dosage testing to determine the treatment regimen or evaluate the treatment results of diabetes will be paid by health insurance from the second time onwards, at least every 90 ± 3 days.
The doctor's treatment prescribes testing based on the patient's history of examination, treatment and disease progression. To conduct testing, it is recommended that patients should proactively discuss directly with their treating doctor when going to the clinic to get a test indication that is suitable for health insurance payment conditions according to the regulations of the Ministry of Health.
According to Circular No. 26/2025/TT-BYT issued by the Ministry of Health, effective from July 1, 2025, patients with some chronic diseases on the list of permitted diseases will be prescribed outpatient drugs for more than 30 days, instead of the maximum limit of 30 days as before.
Accordingly, the list of diseases and groups of diseases covered by outpatient prescriptions for more than 30 days issued by the Ministry of Health. Specifically, there are 16 groups of diseases, including: infectious diseases, parasites; blood diseases; mental illness; endocrine diseases, nutrition and metabolism.
Common chronic diseases that are treated for more than 30 days include: high blood pressure, diabetes, bronchial asthma, COPD, anxiety disorders, depression; chronic hepatitis B, HIV/AIDS, hypothyroidism, lai of lai, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, dementia; blood and immune diseases such as Thalassemia, musculoskeletal fibromyalgia; and some diseases in adolescence such as menopause. This list has a total of 252 diseases.
Whether or not to be given medicine for more than 30 days depends on the clinical condition and stability of the patient. On that basis, the doctor will decide on the maximum number of days of drug use, but not more than 90 days.
