Skills barriers in job connection
The demand for recruitment in Can Tho City is increasing sharply, but in reality, there is a paradox: Enterprises are "thirsty" for highly skilled workers, while workers are struggling due to lack of skills. This phase difference is creating a barrier to connecting labor supply and demand.
Lack of vocational skills
In reality, at job fairs, many young workers, even students about to graduate, are in a "dilemma". Despite possessing good basic knowledge, when faced with practical requirements from employers, many people were surprised by the skill gap.
Student Ly Chi Dam shared with concern: Many businesses are not too strict about the number of years of experience, but they require practical skills to catch up immediately. This is what we are lacking. When I started approaching real work, I saw a huge difference compared to books.
In the same situation, but from another perspective, many freelancers are also struggling to find a suitable job.
Mr. Le Hong Phuc (Co Do commune, Can Tho city) has tried his hand at a few positions with on-site training support. However, due to a lack of basic vocational skills, the unfavorable learning process caused him to feel discouraged and have to change jobs continuously.
"Without a job, I just work as a manual labor worker around and around, making it difficult to stabilize my life," said Mr. Phuc.
Mr. Vo Nhat Duy (O Mon ward, Can Tho city) said that despite his good health and progressive spirit, because he does not have a professional degree, he has only been able to take on the position of bus employee for many years.
"I have been in this profession for many years, my health is still good, but if I want to become a manager or move to more professional departments, I am stuck with barriers in my qualifications and professional skills. Without expertise, I will always be just an unskilled worker, the opportunity for promotion is almost zero, Duy shared.
The gap between supply and demand
Through a survey of the records of employees applying for jobs, the Can Tho City Employment Service Center (DVVL) found that currently, for unskilled labor recruitment positions, more than 70% of the records meet the basic requirements of the enterprise (age, health, working capacity by shift, etc.).
As for the skills and technical requirements, the application rate is usually only about 40 - 50%. Enterprises have to recruit in multiple rounds or provide additional training.
This shows that the labor market is experiencing a situation where supply and demand are not really compatible. Enterprises have a large recruitment demand, but the quality and skills of a part of the workforce have not met actual requirements. This is an issue that requires closer coordination between management agencies, employment service units and enterprises in consulting, training and connecting employees.
Based on the development orientation of Can Tho City, the City Employment Service Center predicts that the city's human resource needs in 2026 will focus strongly on strategic areas, reflecting economic transformation such as logistics and supply chain management, Information Technology and digital transformation, High-quality tourism and management services...
The shortage will be especially noticeable in positions such as warehouse management, multi-modal transportation, cold supply chain management, application developers, digital transformation consultants capable of applying technology to high-tech agriculture, hotel/resort managers with good foreign languages, professional tour guides and experts with service management skills...
In this reality, the Center will continue to implement policies on the labor market and vocational training, contributing to supporting businesses in the recruitment process as well as creating the most favorable conditions for workers in finding jobs and vocational training.
