Gen Z doing 2-3 jobs at the same time – a positive trend in the labor market

Mr. Ngo Minh Duc (from Phuc Thinh commune, Hanoi), born in 2006, a student of Journalism - College of Television (Thuong Tin commune, Hanoi).

Mr. Duc said that his final year studies have become less stressful, mainly waiting for a thesis, so he is working as a marketing staff for a construction company.

My income at the construction company is stable and at a good level compared to a final year student working like me. Of course, the accompanying requirement is a fairly "heavy" workload. I also face great pressure when running deadlines continuously," Mr. Duc said.

According to Mr. Duc, in addition to his main job, he also does two other jobs. He takes advantage of driving technology bikes on his spare days and accepts video editing and photography for event companies or studios. Passive income from the 2nd and 3rd jobs brings Mr. Duc about 300,000 VND/day.

I choose to work part-time driving or taking photos, editing videos because these jobs give me income immediately after completing the work, not waiting until the end of the month like the main job. I always maintain part-time jobs because "fresh money" income helps me partly reduce the financial burden of renting a house, living, and living. Part-time work also helps me have a savings to prepare for when the main job fluctuates. If I lose my job, during the time of looking for another job, I will still feel secure because there are still part-time jobs and income to maintain my life," Mr. Duc shared.

Also according to Mr. Duc, the jobs he is maintaining not only bring economic income but also give him experience in work and life. "Even driving gives me experience in communicating and exchanging with customers. Taking photos and editing videos will help me improve my skills for the main job with the major I am pursuing," Mr. Duc said.

Mr. Le Xuan Bach (21 years old, Thuong Tin commune, Hanoi City) said that he is currently doing extra work outside of his main job. This is a goal he proactively implements to diversify income sources.

Bach's main job is a badminton coach for elementary and secondary school students. With this job, his income ranges from 6-7 million VND/month. To cover living expenses, expensive rent in Hanoi and increase financial proactiveness, Bach also takes on a job as a bartender at a coffee shop.

Revenue from sideline jobs helps me promptly solve daily expenses without being completely dependent on the fixed monthly salary period. Maintaining two jobs in parallel is both a solution to increase cash accumulation and plays a financial "defense" role. In case the market fluctuates or the main job is interrupted, the sideline income will create the necessary stability in cash flow," Mr. Bach said.

Also according to Mr. Bach, he respects and works seriously on both main and part-time jobs because for him, the experience in each job brings value for the long journey ahead.

Mr. Le Quang Trung - former Deputy Director in charge of the Department of Employment said that, from a legal perspective, the law allows employees to sign many labor contracts and do many different jobs. In fact, there are many young people who want to work in many positions, many different jobs at the same time.

This brings many benefits to young people: First, they increase their income; second, they improve their accessibility and ability to work; third, through the work they are trained in in many different environments; fourth, this is also a way for workers to challenge themselves in the labor market," Mr. Trung said.

Mr. Trung also said that doing many jobs at the same time helps Gen Z have more skills to adapt to the actual environment of the current labor market. Through doing many jobs, workers show themselves and accumulate skills and income for themselves. The trend of many young people doing many jobs at the same time, even jobs that are not suitable for the profession they are studying, I still consider it positive. This effort helps workers prove themselves. Also through many jobs, they improve their self-level and adapt to all environments," Mr. Trung said.
