LD26151: Boy discovers brain tumor after dropping out of school to work, family falls into poverty
To treat brain tumors, in the past time, Son has performed 7 laser shots, tumor incision intervention and completed one course of radiation therapy.
Born into a difficult family in Lac Son hamlet, Gia Kiem commune, Dong Nai province, Nguyen Vu Son (born in 2010) soon became accustomed to a life of shortage. At the age of 15, due to family circumstances, Son dropped out of school to work with the desire to help his parents. But before he could help for long, he was suddenly diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Recalling her child's journey of discovering the disease, Ms. Nguyen Kim Chi (Son's mother) is still in shock.
“Around September last year, my child started to cry numbness on one side of her face, and often had dizziness. I took my child to the district hospital in Dong Nai for examination and the doctor diagnosed her with a brain tumor, then transferred to People's Hospital 115 (HCMC). My child continued to be transferred to Cho Ray Hospital and is being treated here until now,” Ms. Chi recounted.

Ms. Chi added that for many months, Son has continuously undergone treatment courses. He has performed 7 laser shots, tumor incision intervention and completed one radiation therapy course. Currently, the family is waiting for the evaluation results in the next treatment stage.
However, the disease not only made Son's health decline but also left many serious sequelae.
“Because of nerve compression, my child has a crooked mouth, jaw-dropping, difficulty talking, and sometimes cannot pronounce clearly. His right hand and right leg are paralyzed, he cannot walk on his own, and always needs someone to help him. His eyes are also blurred and his vision is blurred compared to before,” Ms. Chi said choked up.
Son's eating habits are also currently facing many obstacles. He can only use liquid food and eats very little because his body is weak.
The event that struck made the already struggling family's economy even more deadlocked. Ms. Chi said that her family has been in difficulty for many years. At the time of giving birth to their first child, the couple still had to rent a house.
When Son was born, the circumstances were too deprived, so the local authorities supported a house of gratitude to stabilize their lives. On normal days, both husband and wife worked as hired laborers, saving every penny to support their two children and cover living expenses.
“Previously, I worked as a worker with an income of about 8-9 million VND per month. But since my child got sick, I was forced to quit my job to be on duty to take care of my child. All living expenses and treatment are now on my husband's shoulders. He is a freelancer, doing whatever anyone hires him to do, with an income of about 200,000 VND per day,” Ms. Chi said.
With that income, Ms. Chi and her husband cleverly spend enough to cover living expenses and take care of their two children, but since Son got sick, the family has fallen into poverty.
Ms. Chi said that the first radiation therapy session, her family had to pay an advance of 48 million VND, then she was refunded 500,000 VND. The next treatment sessions, each time also cost 10-15 million VND.

My husband and I have borrowed everywhere, and relatives are not well-off, so now I really don't know how to manage anymore. I hope philanthropists and benefactors can help my son so that he has more opportunities to continue treatment and live on," Ms. Chi confided.
Sharing about Son's situation, Mr. Do Van Lieu - Head of the Fatherland Front Committee of Lac Son hamlet said: "Son's family is in a difficult situation in the locality. His mother works in a company, his father is hired to do whatever he wants, so his income is precarious, only enough to cover daily life.
Now Son unfortunately has a brain tumor, the treatment cost is too high, making the family's economy even more exhausted. We really hope that philanthropists will join hands to support him to have conditions to continue treatment and soon overcome this difficult period.
