LD26011: Father has exhaustion, daughter is at risk of dropping out of school
Vinh Long - After getting dialysis three times a week, the man in Vinh Long was economically exhausted, and his daughter was at risk of dropping out of school.
We went to the Great Unity house of Mr. Duong Van Tung's family (born in 1989) in Bang Chang hamlet, Tra Con commune, Vinh Long province. The house has just been handed over for less than a week, the walls still have a new smell of paint, but the strong smell of thickening medicine and the gloomy face of the miserable faces due to illness cannot be filled.
Mr. Tung said that about 5 years ago, he was diagnosed with kidney disease. Due to difficult circumstances, treatment was not maintained fully, making the disease increasingly serious. Up to now, he has had to undergo regular dialysis 3 times a week in Can Tho City to maintain his life.
"Before, I was healthy, working for hire, doing whatever I wanted to take care of my wife and children. Since the illness became serious, there was no longer any labor force, all expenses have been dependent on the help of the people and neighbors, Mr. Tung shared.
To have money for treatment, the family sold 1,000m2 of land - the largest asset left by their parents. Not stopping there, economic pressure and the shock of illness caused Mr. Tung's wife to fall into severe depression and lose her ability to work.
Mr. Tung's monthly expenses for medicine and dialysis are more than 3 million VND. For families who no longer have a stable source of income, this is an excess amount.
In the new house, what Mr. Tung worries about most is not his own illness, but his daughter's future. When all expenses depend on the care of relatives and neighbors, continuing to send children to school becomes a constant worry.
Mr. Tam Hanh - Mr. Tung's neighbor - said: "Uncle Tung's family has been poor for a long time. Since he became seriously ill, he has been considered to be in a dead end. People around are very sympathetic, everyone contributes a little but can only help at first, it cannot last long".
Talking to Lao Dong, Mr. Ha Van Thanh Khuong - Chairman of Tra Con Commune People's Committee - said that the whole commune currently has 119 poor households and 262 near-poor households. Mr. Tung's family is one of the poor households that the locality regularly monitors and supports.
"Recently, the commune has mobilized resources to build the Great Unity house for Mr. Tung's family, helping to have a stable place to live. However, the cost of long-term treatment and the children's education are beyond the local support capacity, and they really need the attention and help of the community and benefactors," said Mr. Khuong.
After leaving Bang Chang hamlet late in the afternoon, the image of a thin father next to the medicine bags in the new house is still haunting. Some places are sheltered from the rain and sun, but Mr. Tung's journey to save his life and keep his children's dream of going to school still has many hardships ahead.
