Going to work through the National Highway 60 roundabout, workers worry about unsafety

In fact, there have been many tragic accidents in this area. Most recently, at around 3:40 p.m. on January 5, 2026, a truck with license plate 29H-741.27 driven by N.V.H, traveling from Can Tho City to Ca Mau, when reaching the National Highway 60 roundabout, collided with a motorbike running from the An Nghiep Industrial Park, causing 2 people on the motorbike to die on the spot.

Mr. Nguyen Van Long - a worker working in An Nghiep Industrial Park - said that the National Highway 60 roundabout is the intersection of many major roads and is also the main traffic route for workers going to work every day.

"In the morning from about 5am to 6am, workers go to work in large numbers because they are preparing to take over. In the afternoon, from about 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., when the shift was over, a lot of people and vehicles also gathered. However, large vehicles passing through this area often run quite fast, so the accident happened very unexpectedly," Mr. Long reflected.

According to Mr. Long, the current roundabout is small in scale, while the number of motorbikes, trucks, and container trucks pouring in at the same time causes vehicles to move close together, limiting visibility. "Just a small collision in the front, the car behind, especially the truck, is very difficult to handle in time," said Mr. Long.

Sharing the same concern, Mr. Tran Van Thanh - a bus driver who often travels through this road - said that more than 10 days ago, an accident occurred at the roundabout, causing traffic congestion for more than 1km for many hours. "At that time, I was driving from the old Soc Trang City to the center of Can Tho City when the accident occurred in the opposite direction. When I returned, the traffic jams had not been relieved," said Mr. Thanh.

A resident living near the roundabout said that this area has many cafes, the situation of buying and selling, gathering encroaching on the roadside is quite common, somewhat obstructing the view of traffic participants. " accidents happen every few months," he said.

Faced with the above situation, recently the Department of Construction of Can Tho City coordinated with the Traffic Police Department - Can Tho City Police, Road Management Office IV.4, Soc Trang Ward People's Committee and Soc Trang National Highway 1 BOT Company Limited to conduct a field survey at the intersection between National Highway 1A - Soc Vo Street - National Highway 1 - Vo Van Kiet Street bypass - National Highway 60.

The Department of Construction proposed that National Highway 1 Soc Trang BOT Company Limited add a number of items on National Highway 1A within the scope of the BOT project, including: repainting the speed-reducing edges according to regulations; installing a yellow lighting system at the intersection; adding reflective reflectors leading to the roundabout island.

The People's Committee of Soc Trang Ward proposed to direct relevant units to paint the speed limit on Vo Van Kiet Street and Soc Vo Street; repair and supplement the lighting system around the intersection; relocate signs at the intersection between the National Highway 1 bypass and Vo Van Kiet Street to ensure visibility for traffic participants.

On National Highway 60, the Department of Construction of Can Tho City will directly paint the speed-reducing edges according to regulations to ensure traffic organization at the intersection location is safer, especially during the upcoming Lunar New Year.
