LD26013: terminal cancer, wife struggles to take care of bedridden husband and 2 children
An Giang - Having terminal cancer, Ms. Huong still carries the burden of family care for her husband, who is bedridden and has 2 young grandchildren.
Amidst the bustling pace of life, there are still quiet lives struggling to cope with illness and poverty. That is the situation of Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong (born in 1997), residing in Hoa Binh Hamlet, Hoa Thuan Commune, An Giang Province.
In a rented house located deep in an alley in Thanh Dong commune, An Giang province, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Liem (51 years old, Mrs. Huong's husband) lay motionless on the bed. After two serious strokes, he suffered from hemiplegia and memory loss.
Mrs. Huong, who is taking care of her husband, is thin, sluggish, and her eyes are heavy with thoughts. She herself is also suffering from end-stage lymphatic cancer, which was diagnosed by a doctor at Kien Giang Oncology Hospital in October 2024.
No longer able to work, no money for treatment, Mrs. Huong only took herbal medicine for a day, trying to get up and take care of porridge and medicine for her husband and two young grandchildren in the house.
The situation was already difficult, Mrs. Huong was also struggling to take care of her 2 young grandchildren. The nephew (25 years old) suffered from Japanese encephalitis since childhood, his intelligence was just a child, and his mother also left him and her husband to raise. The eldest child (7 years old, in grade 1) was sent back to his maternal grandmother to take care of because of difficult circumstances.
The family's current livelihood is about 3 million VND per month sent by their daughter who works as a worker in Ho Chi Minh City. The small amount of money that you have to pay for rent, buy medicine, eat and drink for daily activities is nothing.
For many years, the whole family has left her hometown in Hoa Thuan to go to Ho Chi Minh City to find a job to make a living. After a period of serious illness, the whole family moved to Thanh Dong commune to live, hoping to find a doctor to treat her husband and find a job to make a living.
In the rented house, she and her husband work as workers to make a living for the whole family. But since her husband was seriously ill, she has been busy taking care of him and his grandchild, so she can only accept a part-time job when someone is hired.
Currently, she herself is also seriously ill, and all the hardships in life are more than enough.
"I just hope to have some medicine to prolong my life, and one day I will worry about my husband and my two children. Knowing that it is a disease, sometimes my health is not normal but I am also nervous, just afraid of what I have, how can I do it with the two children", Ms. Huong said sadly.
Mr. Nguyen Van Con - Party Cell Secretary, Head of Hoa Binh Hamlet, Hoa Thuan Commune - said: "Ms. Huong's family is in a difficult situation but is willing to do business. To make a living, they leave their hometown to work for hire in other countries. Recently, when hearing that Ms. Huong's husband was seriously ill, the locality also supported the procedures to receive monthly social protection benefits. However, given the current situation of the family, hoping for the help of the community so that the family has a way out, the child can go to school with peace of mind".
In a cramped rented house, the woman still struggles every day, nurturing the belief that some miracle will come to save her family from adversity.
Her thin hands suppress the pain of illness and still have to do everything from taking care of her husband to luring her naively raised grandchild to eat each piece of rice.
