LD26212: Persistent serious illnesses, poor man helplessly watches his wife and children in distress

Returning to Phu Phung commune, we could not help but feel sorry for the situation of Mr. Nguyen Van Ut's family (born in 1978). The whole family of 3 people is currently living on land of acquaintances in a makeshift house, lacking everything.

The house is empty in the front, exposed in the back, with no valuable assets. Once the main breadwinner, Mr. Ut can now only lie on the old bed, endure the pain and watch his wife and children struggle to worry about each meal and medicine money.

According to the discharge papers, Mr. Ut suffered from cirrhosis, valve regurgitation, hepatitis B, blood clotting disorders and gastritis. Successive dangerous diseases have exhausted his health, making him unable to work to help his family.

Lying motionless on the bed, Mr. Ut's voice choked up when mentioning his current situation. The man who once tried to work hard to earn money to take care of his wife and children now only knows how to lie down and watch, every time he sees his wife rushing to sell lottery tickets, he feels even more remorseful.

Looking at my wife selling lottery tickets every day, I feel so sorry for her but I can't do anything. I want to get up to work, earn money to take care of my wife and children as before, but the illness does not allow it. Many times it hurts so much, I just know to lie down and endure it," Mr. Ut choked up.

Mr. Ut said that in the past, although family life was difficult, he still tried to manage. His wife sold lottery tickets, and he worked as a hired laborer, doing whatever anyone hired him to do. The money earned was used to cover family life.

Now he is seriously ill, the money for medicine is already difficult, the food money still has to be taken care of every day. There are times when there is no money left in the house, my wife still has to sell lottery tickets. I lie here watching my wife and children suffer and feel very heartbroken, just afraid that one day I will no longer have the strength to see my children grow up," Mr. Ut said in tears.

More pitifully, Mr. Ut's family does not have land and has to live on land of acquaintances. All living expenses depend on his wife's meager income from selling lottery tickets, while he needs to treat many diseases at the same time.

Mr. Bay Binh - a long-time neighbor - said that in the past, people around often bought lottery tickets to support the family. Since Mr. Ut became seriously ill, everyone has tried to contribute rice and small gifts so that the family has more to eat.

Seeing that the family was too poor, everyone contributed whatever they had. Some gave a can of rice, some gave a little sticky rice, sometimes contributing a little money for Mr. Ut to buy medicine. But the people here are also poor, only helping somewhat," Mr. Bay Binh shared.

Ms. Tran Thi Tuyet - Chairwoman of the Phu Phung Commune Red Cross Society - confirmed that Mr. Ut's family is in particularly difficult circumstances in the locality. The government and mass organizations regularly pay attention to and mobilize socialized resources to support the family.

Mr. Ut's condition is too serious, and the family has no land and no stable income. His wife has to sell lottery tickets to take care of her husband and children, so life is very difficult. We hope philanthropists, benefactors and the community will join hands to help the family have more conditions to overcome difficult times," Ms. Tuyet said.
