LD26015: Poor sick mother raises two children with mental illness alone

The primitive house of Ms. Tran Thi Hang (born in 1957) is located in the middle of the countryside, with cracked walls and a crooked tiled roof after many years of not being repaired. The entire Van Hoi village (Thuong Tin commune, Hanoi) knows this as the place of residence for Mrs. Hang and her children, which is also proof of the years of hardship with no way out.

Mrs. Hang soon experienced great losses in her life. Her parents passed away more than 40 years ago, leaving her to struggle in the midst of many difficulties. Previously, she had a husband as her spiritual support, but more than 2 years ago, her husband passed away after a serious illness, all the burden of life was on the shoulders of a weak woman.

Ms. Hang has two daughters, Nguyen Thi Hieu Ly (20 years old) and Nguyen Thi Lan Anh (13 years old). Both of them suffered from mental illness since childhood and could not continue to go to school. They needed care for every day of their lives. "They are sometimes busy, sometimes busy, sometimes sitting in one place all day, sometimes crying uncontrollably," Ms. Hang shared.

To have money to take care of their children's food and medicine, every day the poor mother tries to go to the fields to pick snails and bottles. The work is hard, the income is unstable, when she is healthy, she earns tens of thousands of VND a day; on sick days, she has almost no money in hand.

Ms. Hang herself also suffered from many diseases such as bone and joint pain, prolonged headaches, and neurological diseases. However, due to lack of economic conditions, she only dared to buy medicine outside to drink in moderation. "The money I earn is just enough to eat and take care of my children's medicine, I don't dare think about going to the hospital," Ms. Hang said choking up.

The family's only stable income is currently a social allowance of about 500,000 VND/month. Ms. Hang had to divide the small amount of money equally between parents and children, from rice, vegetables to medicine, so there was always a shortage of both before and after.

Ms. Hang's relatives live nearby, but everyone has their own family, life is still difficult; help only stops at visits, encouragement, and cannot provide long-term financial support. In the old house, Hang and her children still rely on each other, struggling to make ends meet...

Talking to a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Ms. Tran Thi Man - Head of Van Hoi Village, Thuong Tin Commune said that Ms. Tran Thi Hang is one of the cases with particularly difficult circumstances in the locality. "Ms. Hang lives alone raising her two daughters, both of whom are mentally ill, while she herself also suffered from many illnesses, declined health, and was no longer able to work stably," Ms. Man shared.

According to Ms. Tran Thi Man, the family's income mainly depends on picking snails, collecting scrap metal and a small monthly social allowance. However, this amount of money is only enough to cover the minimum living expenses, unable to cover the long-term cost of medicine and treatment for both parents and children. "The locality always monitors, encourages and supports according to its ability, but to help Ms. Hang's family overcome the difficult period soon, it is necessary to have the cooperation and help of the community," said Ms. Man.
