LD26002: Near the death gate, a poor woman has no money to filter her blood
Vinh Long - Having just received a charity house, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy in Phu Thuan 2 Hamlet, An Binh Commune fell seriously ill and her family was exhausted.
We went to the Cardiovascular Respiratory Department - Vinh Long General Hospital late in the afternoon, where Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy (born in 1965) was lying in a corner. The old lady's face was gray, her tired eyes were cramped by the sound of a kidney- running machine shouting continuously and lifelessly.
For more than a month now, the hospital has become the second home of this miserable woman. The surrounding kidney disease and heart failure caused her to be exhausted and had to be given a continuous blood transfusion.
Mr. Ngo Van Xoi - Ms. Thuy's husband - choked up as he said: "Real and end-stage heart failure suddenly hit me in April 2025. She collapsed from prolonged fatigue and continuous poor sleep".
"The doctor's warning caused the family to fall into a deadlock: her kidneys were completely damaged, only need to have dialysis and periodic blood transfusions to maintain life. Seeing my wife in pain, I felt like I had broken every part of my intestines and could not do anything else."
Getting dialysis three times a week on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday is the only hope. However, the cost of 3.5 million VND per week is beyond the means of a family without land or garden.
According to Mr. Xoi, he used to work as a security guard to earn money to take care of his family, but since his wife was hospitalized, he has been forced to quit his job to take care of her. The prolonged cost of treatment has caused the family to borrow money from everywhere, and now they are no longer able to borrow more from relatives because the debt is too large.
The worry grew when thinking about the two poor grandchildren. Daughter was cheating, her marriage broke down, she had to go wash dishes for hire in Ho Chi Minh City to send money to support, but her small salary was nothing compared to hospital fees.
Mr. Xoi put away tears, looking at his fascinated wife: "The two children still do not know that their grandmother's life is fragile. They are still innocently waiting for their grandparents to return, but with this situation, I don't know how long I can last," Mr. Xoi added.
Ms. Le Thi Tam - a neighbor near and far - sadly said that everyone in the neighborhood sympathized with Ms. Thuy's family's situation but was helpless.
"Some people contribute a few cans of rice, some give fish to share difficulties, but the cost of treatment is too high, causing the help from neighbors to stop at the level of resistance," Ms. Tam added.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Truong Le Minh Thong - Vice Chairman of An Binh Commune People's Committee - was concerned about the situation of many poor households, creating great pressure on social security work in the locality.
According to Mr. Thong, the whole commune currently has 61 poor households, 262 near-poor households and about 400 households in especially difficult circumstances; of which, Ms. Thuy's family is a special case, regularly receiving priority support.
Ms. Thuy's life is currently only calculated by blood filtration, units of blood being pumped into the body. If she had to stop due to lack of funding, the door to life would have been forever closed to her.
"More than ever, Mrs. Thuy needs kind hands to overcome the line of life and death. A help at this time is a priceless gift, helping the two children not to lose their grandmother," Mr. Thong added.
